U R correct Q jets in the 80's on alot of apps. 1990's Holley
OP post number 1 - says it bogs not stalls - |
My Lib would miss, spit, and sputter when it hit the interrupter.
After a second or two the cable would finally let the drive engage and start running OK. Cable would just drag from dragging inside the outer sheath/sleeve/housing. Replacing cable fixed it up nicely. |
Won't pretend to have near the experience and knowledge as BUP, just thought I would share what I went through with mine a few years back.
I had fooled around with the switch and tried adjusting the cable without any improvement. Replaced the cable with a new that did not have the tension and drag and all was good afterwards. Heard it was pretty common back them. Even got "new/improved" version of the cable (from what I was told). Something like red housing was old, new orange or vise versa... Mine had ran excellent all the time except when shifting, forward or reverse. Once the gear change was made and drive engaged all good again. Made it rough to pull anyone behind the boat and scary around docks. Good luck! |
it is very easy to test the ESA, just unplug it, oh and make sure you don't have too high of an high idle or it will clunk hard when you shift....
|
Put a BBC in it. I had an 85 and would run into one of the few that came from factory with a 454/330. Back then upper 60's was clipping along pretty well. Fun boat and hope you get resolved. Btw not sure if it was mentioned however make sure fuel line return is clear of any mud bee debris etc.

Maybe I am misunderstanding from the OP (bog) as it is totally different than a miss, spit or sputter or shut down. Just saying.
|
Bogs out like its starving for fuel. Guess we need to clarify bogs out? Most often referred to bogs down so I'm assuming it's not stalling? Any new info on the subject from OP? Sounds fuel related to me. Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. That will eliminate a lot of possible fuel related issues. Don't let the running and revving in neutral fine rule out a fuel related.
if you've cked all the obvious fuel related possibilities then I'd refer to ezstripers post. |
Any news?

Non related but....I rebuilt a Quadrajet this week that I expected the worse (junk inside) since bad idle, misfire when try for some power, etc, etc. Thing was totally clean inside. Cleaned it anyway, new gaskets, needle and seat, etc,etc.....
As I was done and flipping it over, my finger touched the secondary door and my brain (I have one sometimes, but not enough of the time) caught that it felt loose ie: way to easy to open. The set screw for the air door valve spring was loose. The spring had no tension. The spring wasn't touching the 'pin.' Doh ! I suspect this was a reman or someone else had it apart at one time as their was no merc tag on it and the set screw was mostly stripped in the female torx side. |
Yes I've seen how the secondary spring can be hard to re catch without flipping a qjet.
