mercruiser power steering issue bravo
I have a 496 HO Bravo 1 outdrive with a dual ram external Mayfair system. The inside still uses the cable and Brazil valve system that comes stock with the mecruiser set up.
The boat is a 2005. I put the mayfair external ram system on 2 or 3 years ago. Always worked fine. Last weekend I lost all power steering support. I can still turn the outdrive with cable only - very difficult. I confirmed there is no assist with the motor running. Really no change with the motor running or not. I took the high pressure line off the brazil valve and fired it up for about 3 seconds. This was enough for the pump to fill roughly a 1/2 quart into a container.
I am assuming the brazil shuttle valve is bad and it is not the pump based on this test. Any thoughts out there on how to fix? Can I rebuild the valve? I see ball, spring and seat kits online for this system for about 10 bucks. Any chance this is something simple? Is there a way to test the valve?
I would appreciate any advice.
