Sonny Leonard Engines

Anyone have a pair of Sonny's in their boat?

This seems like a nice package:
http://www.sonnysracingengines.com/b...-marine-engine

And the bigger cube, NA engines seems pretty sweet, with a not so sweet price tag! Would love to have a 1,000HP NA package, way cool. Probably would not fit in a side-by-side config.

Anyone know if he does rebuilds? Or works on anything else besides what he offers as packages?

TENSION 12-09-2016 09:08 AM

If I were to win the lottery, I'd put one of his engines in my living room, just to look at! Aluminum Art!

They have one of the nicest machine shops in the world. They do everything from restoration stuff on up. Sonny is a nice guy to talk to.

Some amazing engines. High price yet good example of getting what you pay for. I think Full Force needs a couple of these.

sonicss42 12-09-2016 08:37 PM

Ouch, felt that all the way over here in MD.

Ya but you know it would get strapped onto something. Guys hanging out in a living room with a few boxes of beer.... Somebody would come up with something so called "brilliant" at the time.

ezstriper 12-10-2016 08:40 AM

He does a LOT of his own "special parts" great innovator, we ran a 565 from him few years back in a top sportsman car, was a great engine, friend of mine has been running one of his 903ci pro mod engines for a few years now, again great stuff....now how fast do you want to go $$$$$$$

frickstyle 12-10-2016 09:07 AM

Yeah, it's a pipedream. BUT, from the amount I've spent already, could just have a pair of these and be done screwing around.

F-2 Speedy 12-10-2016 09:42 AM

My friend runs Sonny heads on his 632 Top sportsman engine with 3 stages of NOS, man that thing hauls the mail.

Full Force 12-10-2016 09:57 AM

Are you saying I cheaped out? because I can assure you I did not cheap out....misguided yes, cheaped out no...

STFU already and pull your tampon out

Stop with all the negativity, try reading people's post with a positive attitude, he's just saying that those are some sweet engines and actually are LESS expensive then most would expect, making them almost in reach VS a build like yours.

Full Force 12-10-2016 10:47 AM

lol ok Kevin, you are negative... I am saying I didn't cheap out. If you do t like what I post move on, and if you wanna tell me to shut up, I will make sure I am at boyne so you can say it to my face, because I can assure you will not.

Move on... Not your issue to comment on.

Again, try reading the post in ANY OTHER WAY THEN NEGATIVE! :lolhit:

We are ALL passionate powerboaters, who razz each other and give each other chit, just like when we are rafted up having a good time. Why do you act so serious on OSO. Have some fun, take a JOKE, and stop being such a Grinch. (70% of jokes are true though ;-) :lolhit:

You already know that I don't sugar coat what I say, and I already have told you EXACTLY how I feel about things over the phone and through text, no reason to think it will be any different in person. So go ahead and ACT tough on here. I have no problem giving anyone a "hard time" and telling them how I feel. Its all about the "tone" used, and sorry that your brain inserts the WRONG tones while you read OSO. :ernaehrung004::drink:

Its all good Tim, we may not be friends, but that doesn't mean we cant have a good time while enjoying the same hobby. If you want to live your life as a pessimist threatening to fight all the time then I'm sorry for you.

Sometimes I feel like kicking my own ass over the dough Ive put into my boat.

Here we go.

Let me be the first.

It's 25 degrees here in northern Ohio. Think I'll go fire up the torpedo heater and work on the hotrods some.

Oh boy. A total breach of protocol............Sounded like a triple dog dare to me.

Wasn't it more fun when we were just arguing over this? :drink:

Cool thread thanks for starting! I have always loved his work!

Anyone know what boats are running these?

only the guys with deep pockets have these.

Full Force 12-10-2016 11:26 AM

Maybe I read it wrong, but seemed that way to me. Just so used to defending myself anymore it's natural... No biggie I am over it.

As for these engines, I bet they are sweet and yes not bad pricing for what you get... I often wondered at times if certain "crate" engines are with the extra cash, all depends I guess.

Well there's plenty of those in this sport! Sick of seeing the plastic stuff, want to see more of these!

Anyone have a guess how reliable they are?

Sydwayz 12-10-2016 11:56 AM

Member "billy cully" has a pair of his motors in his 42 Cigarette Tiger "Hammertime".
He isn't on here much, I know that Billy's happy with them. Sonny stands behind his work.

An oso tech section argument, that I wasn't involved in!?

I have been slacking off.

Full force, eat chit. Offshorexcursion, go F yourself. :coolcowboy:

MILD THUNDER 12-10-2016 12:16 PM

Freakstyle, I know you've suffered some engine problems with your big blower motors. I don't think I'd be quick to jump ship, and go big power N/A just yet. I don't think your issues are stemmed from the fact the engine has a supercharger sitting on top of it. I think once you get with the right builder, or get them sorted out, you'll like the way they run.

Aside from that, the big power N/A engines are bad azz.

Full Force 12-10-2016 01:13 PM

BUP 12-10-2016 11:56 PM

I just got back from PRI and once again seen SL engines up close and have to say his custom builds and custom fab work is one of the best. His engines surely stand out. On another note very hard to see the whole PRI show in the 3 day span. Seems like the show keeps growing every year as well.

BUP 12-10-2016 11:59 PM

Does anyone know if you can take a tour of his facility ? And how one could arrange to do so ?

Baja Rooster 12-11-2016 12:47 AM

My mo...sees $40k engine but thinks too much money then spends all summer building a $20k motor three times, lol

The entry point on those motors is high, but there's great value there.

offshorexcursion 12-11-2016 01:01 AM

Every model of his marine engines blow me away. They are actually priced fair compared to the big power from Sterling, Chief, Goodwin and Mercury costing over 100k++ to 200k.

great video, thanks for sharing.

Cool video thanks for sharing.

I'm impressed with this company and almost embarrassed for most of the "marine builders". I understand there's a million reasons but WOW very cool stuff.

I'm getting 2 of these,,filling the cabin w/ nos tanks.:D
