Electric water pump, yay or nay?

I recently purchased a Pachanga 22 with a lightly built 7.4. It had the circulation pump removed in favor of a crossover. Since I boat 100% of the time in saltwater I plan to convert it over to closed cooling, obviously requiring the installation of a circulation pump. The previous owner was 100% freshwater lakes, so the cooling system wasn't a concern then.

I've been considering using an electric pump like this one:

It'll bolt right in without having to re-do any belts or add pulleys, and we do a fair amount of slow speed cruising in the ICW where the specs seem to favor the flow rate of this pump over a mechanical.

Any cons I'm missing?

thanks!

I used to run an Electric Meziere on my LSx motors. Liked em a lot .
Used to run them after the motor was off and in between runs to cool the motor down.
I say go for it, I never had an issue with one.

Looks like a cool unit
Are the belts going to be out of the way of the electric motor?
Remember you're SOL if the electric motor quits, the nice thing about mechanical is it probably won't stop until the engine does

By my initial measurements the belts clear nicely. And I do agree about the motor dying, but we never get too far from shore (typically within tampa bay) and we've got a good sea tow card :)

For a drag or show car or something, electric is fine, but i like the belt driven pumps on a boat. I have never had an issue with one.

I have had automotive pumps weep antifreeze but never a salt water marine one weep, even from a 1986 mercruiser engine. Go figure

If you go this route, I'd recommend Meziere also.

X3 on the Meziere units. I've never used that summit version, but have heard about some failures with them while researching best electric models.

used several elec pumps for drag race setups, just put on on my son's LSX setup using the BB summit one and adapters, seems fine, I think in a boat I would use std pump though, as they really are not designed for long running times..

Is a constant running pump at full speed going to work at low engine speeds in your closed cooling system ? IE: temp regulation, psi, and etc ?

Coast Guard Approved ?? ?
