LS 454 in crate, how much is it worth and how do I get rid of it?

I have an engine, still in the crate, with casting number 14015445. It belonged to my dad who recently passed. I have no idea what its worth or where to sell it. Can anyone help me?

airjunky 02-28-2017 08:51 AM

Where is it?

It is in a barn in South Carolina. Where would I find the GM Part number?

MILD THUNDER 02-28-2017 09:46 AM

Is it a NEW GM engine, or a rebuilt? That could have some affect on the value.

Rectangle port heads?

Attach some links to pics , even if its in a gm crate . I reuse the crap out of those things . At least we now know its not a buick 401 stuck in there and shipped to that barn though

GGraham 02-28-2017 02:14 PM

New in crate. Rectangular port heads. I'm trying to figure out how to post pictures.

Send them to me if you want and I'll post them. Otherwise you might end up using photobucket and I dislike going there to see pics. [email protected]

GGraham 02-28-2017 02:33 PM

Just sent them

I got 3. Sorry about the orientation, I think they were upright originally but posted sideways.

SB 02-28-2017 03:05 PM

Rectangular heads, flat tappet lifters.

mike tkach 02-28-2017 05:18 PM

78-90 454 2 or 4 bolt,with rect heads my guess is 4 bolt.

GPM 02-28-2017 06:16 PM

Just curious why are you calling it an LS 454

mike tkach 02-28-2017 06:49 PM

mike tkach 02-28-2017 06:51 PM

I'm truly sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself and wish you the best of luck with everything moving forward. Stay strong!

Don't let these guys spook ya. You have something that is worth a few bucks. It's been sitting so it would have to be gone through and some new gaskets but for a markIV 454 4 bolt and rec heads has to be worth 8 to a grand as it sits. But the only way you will know if it is worth more is you would have to see what pistons and crank and such are inside.

picklenjim 03-01-2017 04:12 AM

That could be an LS 6. I remember going to a local chevy dealer back in the day and they had several of them lined up in the parts department in crates. They were painted black like that and had a sticker on the crates that said not intended for marine use. They were 11:1 compression. They had aluminum intakes on them though.

airjunky 03-01-2017 12:47 PM

You have officially passed casting number relevance , look and see if you can find the numbers on the deck surface .may have a real contender there .

There should be a stamping directly above the timing cover and between the two top bolts (in the pic, it's the area that looks like the painter missed). The intended service of the engine can be deciphered from the stamping. Can you take a picture of that stamping?

LS5 would be oval port, thinking like someone else stated there should be a number stamped in the deck surface of the block in front of the right head.

Lee 03-01-2017 03:42 PM

If the first 3 letters stamped on the front pad are "XCH" I'm interested in it.

airjunky 03-07-2017 01:12 PM

There were different flavors of the low compression version of the chevelle ss454 motor, for crate motor duty, from what i remember , some were very special.but all that info is going to be stamped on the deck of the block there

dereknkathy 03-10-2017 04:34 PM

if you can borrow a bore scope and get a pic of a piston top thru spark plug hole, a lot can be told by that.
