It can be either depending on if it's driven by a belt or gear drive. The discharge pipe can be rotated.

And what do you say about the one that is bigger than the 8.3.The dual rotor, this one below.I have twin 602 built very strong ready for boost but I want to make the right choice with the supercharger.Either the 8.3 or this one below

I removed the roots on my 1000 Eickerts, and am replacing them with Whipple EFI quad rotors and MOAC intercoolers, these are 572's. I'm also removing the solid roller cam and going hydraulic. I was told there will be no problems at all building 1150 hp with that combo, and I'm running the smaller 2.3 quad rotors. The 4.5 is a great set up, if I were you, I would use that. With the port injection manifold and the MOAC intercooler, that would be a nice set up for your boat.
