Never heard of checking the valves that way but, probably not a bad idea. I assume you have someone else drive when you are doing that.

Engine box check- open up the hatch and look around for what ever.Vacuum gage tells me alot but most important if I have a vacuum leak.Offshore 5 years 100 ton tug 330 ft. crude oil barge.

750's should be good to around 5200 RPM in a 502 easy.

CFM=502cid x 5200rpm divide this by 3456.

This number is then multiplied by volumetric efficiency which will be between 80 and 100% for a recreational engine. Even at 100% it needs 755 CFM. Your mild engine will be below this V.E.

If you don't have enough carb you don't lean out. The only way you can lean out is if your carb is not metering enough fuel for the air it passes. A 750 cfm carb will only pass 750 cfm or so of air. As long as you don't have a clogged jet or a vacuum leak too small of a carb CANNOT detonate an engine. Too low of jetting can if it is not metering enough fuel for the air.

Thanks guys this is the kind of info I have been looking for. I guess I will hold onto them for a bit and see what I get for engines.
