Should I glass my bulkhead in or just screw it
1 Attachment(s)
Boat is a 281 checkmate. The bulkheads between the cabbin and cockpit were origanally screwed in, but the screws always come loose after beating on them for a while. Since I am glassing the floor in I was thinking of glassing the bulkheads in too. Is their a reason NOT to? Other than to get the tank out your going to have to cut the boat up,but if your going that far its time for a redo anyway lol. So What is the consensus of the board?

Glass it in, bottom and sides, on both sides.

On the sides just roll out the glass while leaving the void btwn the bulkhead and the side of the boat. Anotherwords you don't want to pack or fill it with glass and resin.

Is this to keep from creating stress cracks? Should I make sure their is a gap all the way down the sides? Correct. It will be a stress point and have no flex ability what so ever. Especially at the bulkhead. Just do it in a couple steps. After prep work is done I'd cut the glass to fit moreless in strips of say like 6" wide by whatever length and wet it out on a piece of cardboard or whatever and carefully lift up and put into place. Some choose to wet out on wax paper and put in place and squegy it out with bonds spreader etc and let set up but it's really crucial to remove wax with acetone and or sand or ideally both. Then just apply another layer or two but will be easier after your first one sets up cause you don't have to concern with wetting out the glass where the void is. You'll be fine. |
what the boys of Buzzards bay running do,,we 5200 the seams then glass it up.:)now we don't separate stuff anymore, except our spines.

Hey whatever works!!! After several years of xcross, boating and other stupid stuff I'm just thankful my body had some flexibility otherwise I'd be shattered in pieces everywhere. At some point I might need both glass and 5200 myself though. Pins and plates have worn out.
