That inch or so is how close to sinking you are if that 3 buck home depot pipe cap pops off or tears. I am gonna do a little measuring out back. You can also cap off exhaust hole on outside where exhaust boot went. Then there are 2 exhaust vents about an inch in diameter. I am sure there is a rubber plug or wooden Dowell pin to plug them off. Then with both sides of the exhaust Y closed off it is a somewhat less scary situation.

I just went thru all this over winter. I've personally left Y pipes in and plugged them in the past, however I don't like the look of them sitting there or their hindrance. This time the engines were out so I made a few block off plates and put them on with 5200. So far so good. I think it's personally a choice of the amount of work you want to do.

Side note... Don't mess with trying to cap it from the outside. Not worth the time or effort.

I agree. One of my boats I capped them off. Then, removed motor for mod's and removed Y-pipe at that time. My god how nice it is not to have that fuking Y pipe in the way. Everything become easier. Way easier.

dereknkathy - why are you so hard up by not using a rubber pipe plug ?

Schit, on an Alpha boat, I even have one on the transom assembly and one on the outdrive exhaust inlet. 10yrs or more ?

the rubber caps from home depot are really to cap top of pipe to keep unpleasant odors in your sewage system and out of your house. if you went downstairs and put that cap where there was gonna be a 3 inch diameter column of poop water pushing against it, you would be smelling poop in the near future. the stainless ones in post 2 that clamp on with your existing exhaust bellows don't scare me, just those flimsy rubber caps. and capping off the outside, even if not perfectly sealed would slow the incoming water down if something bad happened to the inside caps or y pipe broke or rotted through. that would be 5 to 10 bucks well spent.

^^^^ actually..... When I lived near the Envision boat factory, they gave me a set made of fiberglass to cap mine on my old Mach 1. They were oval shape just like the Y pipe connection. I was told they installed them on all their boats if the silent choice option wasn't checked.

Thanks for mentioning that. I've seen a bunch of those years back (silent choise was illegal to have here) and I haven't been able to find a source.
