588 what bore stroke and rod length? cam and carb size... 34 degrees is safe.. no more, I'd be careful going too low as you'll be throwing more heat at the exhaust valves, not less than 30 total I'd say, without further info, generally 34 total is a good number,

I will agree with the 34. Just dyno'd 2 555 blower motors and they wanted 34-35. Dropped over 70hp at 32 and started falling off again at 37. I would bet at 30, they would be down over 100hp. EGT's will be through the roof with too little timing. I have done it. Torched the exhaust valves.

That`s too low, exhaust valves will not be happy.
I was running 32* to 5500 then hit a wall.
Raised the timing to 34.. boom.. 6000rpm.
Currently at 35* @6000

Are you running the Map sensors on your blowers Dan? Just set up the Daytona's for a buddy's big cammed 496's, we used the idle retard and idle stabilization feature. The 3D mapping for blowers looks like an awesome feature!

Good to know. Wonder what mercs old 900 sc was set at. Different combos = different timing. Makes sense.

Mercs 900 sc is around 8:1, big cam. I want to say 32, but I can't remember for sure. The 800 is 28* total

I'm using those same SR cams in now to be 548's to give me a little room to spare with the promaxx 317/340 cc Valakoized heads with Daytona set up and 8.4:1 +- with 871's. Will start at 34 deg and go from there.

Yes sir, it`s like EFI timing for carbs.

Not sure if it`s the tune up or the piston oilers but the pistons seem happy.

Before burned oil on all of them,

Now they still look brand new , maybe that`s how they should all look I`m not sure but I like it .
