it sounds like you have msd ready to run distributor,s,a buddy had a problem with one shortly after installing it,the internal module acted up and the engine did exactly as yours.another thing to check is what the rev limiter is set at,i know of one that reset the limiter to 3500 rpm by itself, the cure was to follow the directions and reset the rev limit.you may have a fuel problem, make sure the fuel lines are tight on the suction side of the pump.good luck.

With the distributor problem did it break up or just not rev? I do not think mine is breaking up but it's hard to tell. It just seems to be running fine at 3500 and more throttle does nothing.

Really sounds like it is running out of fuel to me. I think I would do like someone else suggested and rig the fuel feeds so you are using the opposite pumps and see what happens. Really does not sound like ignition.

Had the same problem with one of my 502s. Acted like it was hitting the rev limiter. Turned out to be a bad ignition box.

Just got back to messing with this after a long winter. If it was a rev limiter issue wouldnt it noticeably break up instead of just not turn higher?

Put stock distributor back on and it runs the same so it’s not that. Going to check valve adjustment.

Had a 454 MPI do the exact same at the same RPM. Plug wires were crossed on two cylinders that fired before and after each other.

Finally found problem after doing compression test. One rocker arm nut had backed off enough to let rocker fall off to side of push rod and intake valve was not opening at all so only running on 7 cylinders which I couldn’t hear. Surprisingly no damage. Fixed with a replacement nut with new insert that wasn’t stripped.
