merCruiser Dual Cooler Bellhousing Questions
I have recently purchased two merCruiser bellhousings with dual plate coolers for my fresh 496 stroker motors in the 35' Cigarette Mistress. I am looking for a merCruiser part number for this cooler as I would like to check the pricing of the OEM replacement plate coolers. I'd like to run oil on one side and trans fluid on the other, I am assuming thats the purpose behind the dual coolers. Also, I am running Magnaflow cam-driven seawater pumps on the motors, are they going to work with the bellhousing coolers? Thanks in advance.

I am Plumbing mine right now so I feel your pain. Actually on the Merc 900SC they use both 8 plate coolers for the oil, Then an inline two stage cooler for the tranny and p. Steering mounted beside the motor..
I think you could do it the way you are talking about as long as an 8 plate cooler will be enough. I have order the Hardin 15 plate cooler for mine it runs about $450. This also cleans up the plumbing as you only have to plumb you oil into one cooler and the tranny is much closer to its cooler. Good luck.

I also just bought a set never used but bought it from another oso member. i dont know the part #s but i put a set on a couple of 600ci merlins and they worked great. i ran the oil to one side and the trans to the other. some racers use both coolers for the engine oil it depends on what your doing with the boat. make sure you use a oil thermastat before the cooler to keep your oil at a constant temp. also be sure to seal the bolt heads goodthat bolt to blockinside of housing. does your inlet and outlet have a nipple in them? mine dont , the first set i did i tapped them out and used an fittings. I havent decided if im going to do that with this set or not. your seapumps shouldnt be a problem

I am running some with the 8 plate coolers on 850 hp supercharged motors. One for oil and one trans. KE modified them by installing a #12 balance line between the coolers at the bottom. I am also running his two stage water pumps with each side of the block being supplied by a seperate stage. I have 220 deg oil thermostats in trans and eng oil. I have had no problems keeping the temps in line.

You might want to price the coolers from CP or Hardin, I Would think they would be cheaper then Merc. and they come as a cooler only or as a kit with covers and all the gaskets and hardware needed.

The KPM looks like a much better product than the older Merc. I really like the use of "o" rings instead of the paper gaskets to seal. Joe Murray
