Swapping from a 502 to a 496 HO

Swapping from a single 1996 502 MPI with silent choice exhaust to a 2003 496 HO. Will it bolt right in?Enginemounts? Exhaust ports? Wishbone?

Man thats a mighty big price tag for 10hp and fresh water cooled. Does the 502 have problems because a 96 is not very old?

mats 10-22-2002 11:05 AM

Yes, the 502 has major problems, bad compression, consumes a quart of oil an hour and it does not give more than maybe 350 hp. Basically I have given up on it.

HMMMM might be a good core to start on a Hi-Po rebuild?

bobl 10-22-2002 08:56 PM

mats, why not have a good shop go through that 502 and rebuild and blueprint it. A little head work and a cam change will give you 500 horsepower for a whole lot less than a new 496.

Warranty might be a consideration as well as stock reliability and the cloded cooling...But $4$, the 502 is more effective.

If you are looking to give away your old 502 oil leaking, low compression, tired 502 and worthless for trade in, let me know I might be interested.

I need a coffee table so if you want I may be able to pick the junker up. I wouldn't even charge you for disposal :D

Well, it is a long story, but the 502 has actually been rebuilt. It was rebored to a 509, pistons and rings changed, the heads refurbished, etc. The result was not good the compression was terrible on some cylinders(in the low 70s). In fact it was so bad that air/fuel mixture that passed the rings exploded down in the crankcase. The engine was sent back to the rebuilder ,taken down into pieces, the block was hot tanked and the cylinders measured up by an external shop. Everything was found to be OK. The rings were changed again and the engine put together. Compression went up a bit to 115 on the worst cylinder. Still not good. However, now it started to consume oil, actually on the starboard side of the engine where the compression was OK on all cylinders. The engine will now be taken back by the rebuilder(who also sold it in the first place) and it will serve as part payment for a new engine. sad story. Anyway, any ideas about the compatibility with a 496 HO? will I need a new wishbone for the silent choice?

The 496 has had many problems also. Mercury is slowly working them out, but it is a drawn out process. You would definetely do better with a new 502. WE have 502/550HP in stock. These engines are brand new, and come complete with Merlin heads, Large oil pans, Manley severe duty valves, and Aluminum Intake manifold. This engine will work with your current accessories, and comes with a warranty. The price is 8,500.00 complete with Holley performance carburetor. We can also rebuild your 502 to about 600HP. Feel free to call us if you need anything.

550HP for $8500 and all the goodies you just mentioned. That is a very competitive price. Stephen i will take down your number, do you have a web address yet?

totalmp 10-27-2002 08:05 AM

Our web address is Totalmap.net, but please ignore the mess. We started designing it before summer, and have been poker running ever since. I'm sure we'll finish it when its too cold to boat. Please feel free to call me, as I can send you info on everything.

Stephen
