mercruiser trans
how much power can these trannies hold before they break?or would i be better off switching to some b/w trannies thanks.
|
I have been told 500 hp if another forward clutch is added.Tom Huber or Marc Berman can modify these for additional hp.

The real question is how good are you at throttling and how heavy is your boat? I have a friend that runs a boat with over 650hp in it. If you change over to the BW transmisions you will go slower with the same power as they eat a little more power up. They will also require you to move the engines forward. I will be puting in the area of 450+hp into my boat when I repower and I am not worried about it at all.

Excaliber?
Excalibur! :D |
EXCALIBUR! 450-500hp and you are on the edge at that time. Huber charges about 600 for the rebuild and the upgrade. You supply the seal kit which comes complete from mercruiser. What model excalibur. Hey Zanie how are things going? Forrest

Am running well over 500 HP through an upgraded MercTrans II with Amsoil Race (no slip) synthetic. Over 500 hrs. with no problems in that area at all. --- Jer

JP what type of boat do you have. It makes me feel confident that mine will hold up. But my 27 does not wiegh a lot. Forrest

If you decide to run the MercTrans, they will last a lot longer if you underprop a bit and spin the motors a little higher. Stay away from 4 blade props. If you load these trannys too hard the front pump gear will split in half
I`ve blown up more of these than I care to admit:eek: Kurt. |
FWK: Am running 548 cid in a '77 Martini 7 meter (25'). Dry hull weight w/mechanicals was origionally supposed to be about 3500#. I don't hammer it out of the hole but it flys on occasion since it does top 80 MPH (GPS) on the good condition days. Have made several upgrades since I acquired her in '82 (bow tie block, K Planes, stringer & bottom beefing, raise X-dim, transom notch, but I still think that I would weigh in at under 4K.dry. Am running a several times reworked Spinelli 4 blade 29 (probably about a real 28 now) at 53-5400 on those good days. This was all probably much more than you wanted to know. Later! --- Jer

JPC, wow, have you had any tranny problems?
I have had the MercTrans in a few boats and I got pretty good at rebuilding them:eek: Had a 24 Superboat with a Gale Banks twin turbo big block and a 29p Mirage. I could blow the tranny every time I firewalled the throttle:eek: but I could make it last a lot longer running a 27p |
JP that is just the info I wanted to see. I have a 27 excalibur It weighs less than your boat it has a notched transom and a pad. It runs quite good. I had to add extra bulkheads in the bow. I am waiting for a new prop right now as the cleaver I have lets the motor spin to past 6000 rpm's plus with the extra horsepower the cleaver makes the boat handle terrible below 3500 without any trim. My tranny had water contamination when I got it so I rebuilt it then. Had a very knowledgable friend in the auto-tranny business put together a special clutch pac for me and although I have heard of several others with repeated problems as Biggus has, that has not been the case with me. However, if I were to go through it again I would DEFINITELY have those pump parts cryo-treated! It's amazing just how much that process strengthins the parts and reduces wear. Had some gear failiers with my TRS till I learned that trick and now I haven't even had any fuzz on the magnet in the last 5 yrs. Later! --- Jer

I have 2 brand new Huber 1050s (10 plate clutch/1000 HP rating). I have the paperwork for authenticity too!
I've been keeping these as back-ups for my KE800s but have not had to use them in 3 years. I'm ready to sell them cheap if you want them. PM me or call 608-220-0983. |
