Default Push rod length

I have a stupid question and I know that this has been beaten to death, but there's some smart and experienced engine builders here, so here goes...

I'm putting the valve train together and getting conflicting methods of pushrod length on that internet thingy. One video from a cam company shows that you need the trunnion and tip bearing (drawing a center line through them) to be level with the valve cap retainer at mid lift, and he was not concerned that the tip was on the outer edge of the valve. In this case my geometry is perfect, but the strike on the valve tip is on the outer third and rolls to the center but never over it. Comp cams wants it to start from the inner part and roll through the center with the load marks being in the middle. This is what makes sense to me and would require shorter rods. Thoughts from the trusty OSO brain trust?
