Default Spark Plug Gap

We have a 2000 7.4 MPI pure stock (310 hp). Per the shop manual the gap on the plugs is to be 0.045. This just seems like too much gap. This is the first time that I've replaced plugs.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance and have a safe 4th of July Holiday
