That sucks. Don't quote me but i think the stock merc canister coil is .8 ohms and this must be matched when using a different coil ? That said, before I heard this, I had installed the HVC epoxy canister coils on several TBIV motors many years ago (10+) and still going strong.

But yeh,best bet is to stay away from MSD anything. ;(

Very doubtful. My bet is on a ground issue.
Try running a ground wire from one of the dist cap screws to a good clean ground on the engine block.
