Default Skills to perform an engine Scan?

Would you let a non qualified fellow scan your engine? Pre sale inspection. Is there a risk to blow something if not done properly? I dont like the statement « my friend as a scan tool and will perform a scan for me» . I would much prefer a qualified merc mechanic.

the scan tool is easy to use, just reading things like hour use won,t change anything but if you don,t trust your buddy by all means take it to a shop and pay for it.

You can't change anything with Mercruiser CDS diagnostics or rinder and MEDS you can only read information stored. Your see run hours, RPM history and any codes that that are set and active a long with the freeze frame for the said codes. So a complete gimp could plug in and read the ECM/PCM and not alter anything.

prob the worst case would be that scan tool does not communicate with your engine. Meaning the software in the scan tool is not updated or just for MEFI 1 - 2 -3 or the DLC adaptors does not adapt for the app DLC engine side. Thats when I would get worried as that person might think, it has engine side issues why the scan tool does not communicate, with that said who knows what that person might do attempting to fix the NO communication.from the scan tool.

I would find out what scan tool and what version to make sure it adapts to your engine. .

If you do not want the scan to take place - then possible met up a Merc OEM service shop and have them scan it with a print out. Most shops only charge 100 bucks, some higher
