I take care of a 38 Baja that had a survey done before he bought it up north. first time I saw it I noticed that one of the bravo gimble helmets was broken at the hinge pin and the drive was flopping around. the genset would not run and had never been tested on the survey, it had several wiring issues and one prop was beat up. none of it was on the survey. on this boat the first time out it dropped a valve thanks to a crappy comp cams beehive spring retainer. the owner called me when it was down on power (first time I found out he had bought another boat), told him to shut it off and idle in on the other engine, he said it was a long way to the ramp and he was going to see if it would make it back, I told him it is hurt and is not going to get better, shut it off. 20 min later he calls and say the hurt motor is losing oil pressure, again, shut it off it is hurt. he decides to try to make it back and spits a rod out the block. you say live and learn but seems to be little learning in the boat world at times.

Update:

Port motor has a lifter that's seized in its bore on Cyl #1, so of course no valve motion there. They are Iskenderian solid lifters.

Have you talked with Whites ? I believe you said they built the engines, or are they doing the tear down, we've seen a few threads on here about the same thing, not enough clearance on the lifter bore when changing to new lifters, or new block

Whites did the initial build in 2014 but the port motor was reworked in 2016. White's communication is pretty awful - I've left countless messages with their reception staff and never get a tech to call back.

That was my first question as well. He says it appears to be fine - somehow I guess it seized above where it would have contacted the cam lobe?

but that usually means the valve hits the piston, and damage there ?? or was the bent pushrods the issue

Correct - heads haven't been pulled yet, that's supposed to happen today. I'll post back when I hear the result.

So your whole boat is at this place ? Or just the engine ?

I do not know whom they are so does anyone else have a dealing with them up here ?

So since the inspection really did pin point any of the issues that you have - I was thinking how is the rest of the systems on your boat ?? Maybe before you sink a alot of money into this project get a second opinion about the other systems ---- transom - stringers - transom assembly -- steering - drives - and so on. You know since that certified SAMS inspector MISSED everything on the engine side and fuel side as well ---- so who knows I am sure he missed other things as well. I would have other things looked at for a piece of mind before you spend a ton on the engines.

BUP your SO right but I think OT may wind up going into cardiac arrest. I have a feeling engines weren't rebuilt to marine specs. Tighter tolerances etc. Both should be completely gone through and rebuilt/refreshed. But yes getting another opinion on the rest of the boat would certainly be worthy. Not good to assume anything at this point. Like they say assumption can be a mother of all fk ups. Get good insurance anchor. Ya know what I'm saying. At the very least aside from the engines have the transoms, stringers and drives checked by a marine mechanic.

I just went back and read earlier post from ancho and saw he mentioned boat went to highly recommended marine mechanic. That's a good thing and would imagine he will check boat over well.
