Mounting Smart coils
I just bought 8 Holley smart coils.
anyone know of a bracket for mounting them on the back of the head or engine. Otherwise I will have to make a mounting plate to mount the coils, HP module and relays. |
Not sure of premade mounts, but as far as mounting locations, I made a bracket for mine and mounted them below the exhaust. That way, they are pretty much hidden, yet still close to the plug so I could run a short wire.

I have made composite plates even a few from carbon fiber sheets - then mount coils plus even spaced mount the coil back sides, then mount plate / or sheet in the best possible location. ie : backside of engine(s) or bulkhead or even some locations inner of the engine compartment dividers -- I have even mounted the plates off the stringers then custom make shorter plug wires. There is custom alum plates and or brackets out in the market place to mount all on the top of the valve covers as well. |
I believe that I have room on the back of the engine to mount a plate to mount the computer, relays and coils to.
Everything about this boat is organized, neat and compact. The engine compartment was a mess of cables, hoses and wires when I bought it. everything is tucked up under the top half now. I have to pull the engine to repair an oil leak and replace the start relay anyway so it will be a lot easier to do with the engine out. That and I have a thought to increase my CR to 14+ to 1 and run E85 - should be good for 1000 HP NA. |
Do you have any pictures of what you did to mount them?
|
Paint them Merc blue and mount to the top of your valve covers. Hah... as I'm sure you've seen however not real trick looking to say the least. |
My engine isn't Mer'c blue. I built this engine from scratch. The only Mer'c parts are the thermostat housing, bell housing and flywheel ( balanced neutral )
My block is painted bright white and the heads are raw aluminum, valve covers, intake, pulleys and other things are painted transparent candy apple red. |
holley makes these and I have somewhat copied the design with carbon fiber sheets or composite sheets. Then drilled my own holes, then used spacers and isolators to mount the coils and installed in the best possible location per apps. I also have used these holley coil mounts in the pic as well. If I get a chance to go thru some of my past SD cards to pull up pics, Ill see what I can post. Hopefully I do not have to go thru too many SD cards to find these pics. I have so many and all full with boat related stuff.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bbb3105274.jpg

used these before https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...052a09a1a7.jpg

and used this before once or twice https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6dc6fcd197.jpg

hope this helps whomever and I do like shorter spark plug wire runs and like to keep as much as possible any units away from heat and any water intrusion ie water leaks from sunpad areas when swimmers climb back in the boat. just saying.
Also do not like spark plug wires with tight bends in them period. I favor a straight shot as possible and short runs if all possible plus away from other sensors and or especially any knock sensors. Includes the coil(s) as well. |
Thanks
I saw that last one on their website. |

I don't have any pictures of the front showing the white block but it is the same color as the bracket mounting the MSD box.
The headers were supposed to be the same color as the other parts but the idiot didn't get all of the old paint off ( black ) with the sand blaster and so it showed through the transparent red. SO he painted them again and the problem with transparent paint is the thicker it gets the darker it gets. The clear collar around the flame arrester mates to the bottom of the hood scoop for ram air. |
Nice job. color reminds me of more power racing. Looks nice! |
by the looks of the hat at the bottom of the flame arrestor, I am taking it you have an open engine hatch scoop ?
Sorry I read your post and see now as it is a scoop set up --- Just edited my post as I went back up to read your post below pic. |
Looks killer! I was mostly interested in the red as I’m painting a moto and like the looks of layers of tinted clear. |
I have a friend of mine prototyping some of theses coil mounts right now , I'm mounting them on the Jeff Johnston Valve covers , Similiar to an LS.
We used the LS Mounts form ICT Billet 551575 as a starting point , but they point exactly opposite from the way they should. We also removed all the extra mount holes . We are going to make it out of 5/8 aluminium. I hope they will mount to the side of the cast aluminum style covers also. |
Dunnit - post up a picture please.

BUP
I removed the hood scoop and cut a piece of Lexon that fits the opening in the hood with a hole in it that lines up with the collar around the flame arrester then put the hood scoop back on. this makes a noticeable improvement in HP. Hey I like to TINKER... |
Tinkerer
My friend and I just started this project last Saturday . He is going to send me a CAD rendering that I can post up . The mounts will be similar to the ict mounts , but we designed them for BBC use . I scoured the web , like I'm sure you did , for suitable mounts , but decided to make my own. The only thing I found was Merc and Volvo 8.1 mounts and some Images of Keith Eickert stuff. I hope to have something in a few weeks , ( I have a 632 build on hold till they are done! ) |
I’m assuming that’s a Holley injection system? Which one? How do you like it? |
It is a Holley HP, sequential port injection, 2000 CFM throttle body and duel sync distributor. ( soon to be used for sensors and oil pump drive only ) I just bought the cap without plug wire posts.
I ABSOLUTELY love it. This is a 598 CI engine with a big solid roller cam and it idles IN GEAR at 650 RPM ( but doesn't like it ) I have it set to idle at 700 RPM hot and it will do this until you run out of gas in gear without EVER touching the throttle. and it starts every time with just a turn of the key. The system was expensive but I believe it was worth it. How many times have you pulled up to a dock and shifted into reverse and the engine kills. This engine never even hardly falters during shifting. I am thinking on changing to the Dominator computer for the ability to have an O2 sensor on each bank. |

I am using the same set up on a new 632" build , here at the shop. That we are installing in a 26' American Offshore with a #5 drive . I would have liked to use a Crank Trigger set up , but we have packaging issues. I debated long and hard about the dominator for the dual O2 , but the benefit didnt justify the cost. |
Is this engine in your Eliminator?
|
Yes
|
That’s awesome man. I have to say since installing the Daytona’s I’ve never had an issue idling or shifting. I still have to finish tuning the carbs for perfection. I’m guessing without an oxygen sensor it’s not a self tuning system? |
I have ONE O2 sensor in the port header. The ECU uses that to adjust the AF ratio for the whole engine.
With the Dominator ECU it uses an O2 sensor in both banks and averages the two to control AF ratio. I had my alternator stop working for some unknown reason and the low voltage condition fouled out a plug on the port side. ( O2 sensor side ) This caused the ECU to enrich the entire engine to the point that it was missing badly. replaced the plugs and the problem went away. |
I have some pictures of my coil mounts if I can get them Posted.

How in hell do I post from my phone? Cant find directions!
|

They are made from 5/8 material , that way there is no spacers need.
The holes where the big Phillips Screw is , are through holes that have threaded slugs welded in the covers . That way I wont have to remove the coils to remove the valve cover. |
