Gill composite exhaust tips
my boat had these installed already and I noticed an exhaust/ water leak inside the transom. Took it apart and both composite nozzles that are on the inboard sections where melted. Are these known for this? Engines are running great and temp is nice and cool. WTF. Where does your water mix? Also ck your transome exhaust holes for moisture, density. Amazed you didn't notice any performance loss. |
Have to ask who bandaid all the black goop sealant to help stop the transom assemblies from leaking water in. MY guess is the transom is rotted.
Thats alot of black sealant all around those transom assemblies inwhich should not be there at all.. Also most black sealants I have ever seen ARE NOT FOR BELOW THE WATERLINE USAGE. Also hopefully whoever painted the outdrives and assemblies did not paint over all your ZINCS. Did you just buy this boat ? |
Yes picked the boat up a few months ago. These bravos didn’t even have zincs when I got it. All it had was the mercathodes and they where not hooked up. The boat was a freshwater boat but still had a ton of corrosion on the outdrives. I sand blasted them and and shot some epoxy black paint on them. Sometime in the future I’ll put better looking drives on. These are so pitted it’s not worth a bunch of work to make them nice. |

They probably melted at some point when an impeller went bad. I have seen any type of composite exhaust tips. Replace them with SS ones with SS internal flappers.

BUP, the 3M 4200 is rated for below waterline and you can get it in black, and it is stickier than crap. |

Just a guess and only a guess but probably sealed after water oozing in. Usually a gradual process until you discover it one day. To late.... let's hope for the OT trans assemblies were just r&r'd by chance or replaced and a little extra precaution was taken by putting a NICE bead of 4200 or whatever was used. 4200 dries to more of a dull finish unless my brightness is extremely high on my iPad. |
That ooze looks like roofing repair mastic from Home Depot. |
I’m an aircraft mechanic so the sealant around the drives is stuff we use on aircraft to seal gaps to prevent corrosion. It probably does not need to be on their but when I see a place where corrosion might be able to get into I seal it. Since the sealant gets used inside fuel tanks on wet wing aircraft to seal them I’m pretty sure salt water is not going to do anything.
