Default Head gasket thickness

Looking for correct head gasket for my stock carb’d vortec 5.7 with gm 395 cam. I’ve read lots of post with people saying .015 to.038 compressed thickness.

I order the felpro 1094 before doing any research 🙄 now I’m having second thoughts.

In my opinion you should not use the 1094. It is a steel shim gasket and if you have the stock Vortec heads in my opinion they are too flimsy to seal real good with those.

Truthfully all you need is the stock replacement Mercruiser or FelPro marine gasket. They should be .038 thick.

The .020 may be a half a point of compression. Around 2hp loss.

I’ll just have to pull the head and see how far down the piston is. I was hoping to increase compression a little with a thinner gasket. Was hoping some has done this with the same engine

pulled the head and deck height is .025, the gasket appears to be .020 after putting the numbers in an online compression calculator stock this engine is 9.4:1 and using a .015 will bring it up to 9.5:1
