power steering pump /hydraulic steering issue HELP

My old mere power steering pump was leaking so i was told the automotive ones are the same , I'm running full hydraulic steering but ever since I've installed this new pump my steering is super hard , I've done a little research and it says the automotive ones have a smaller diameter pressure release valve? aswell as a different spring ? can someone help me out here ive had this pump off more times then i can count , thinking about buying a marine one tomorrow if this will fix the issue , thanks

Assuming what you have is a standard GM pump.... take the spring/valve/orifice assembly from the old pump and put it in the new one. That should be all you need.

daniel475 07-03-2019 07:26 AM

how do you identify the correct spring and valve , had two pumps on the shelf what I'm thinking happened is one of them got swapped with the incorrect spring and valve

The spring should not make that much of a difference sounds like something is put together wrong of there is another problem. Did you change anything else? Is the filter clean?

daniel475 07-03-2019 10:11 AM

I have not checked the filter but the system is brand new I could for sure check it , what im thinking is the relief valve and spring could be out of this automotive pump? but im not sure how to identify the proper relief valve and spring currently working on getting a marine pump if I can find one

Is it a new helm too? Does it turn easy if you race the motor up?

daniel475 07-03-2019 10:25 AM

system is brand new used only a few weekends from CP Performance , it feels like its kinda working just not fully , still fairly stiff , I haven't tried raising the motor up yet but ill try that but my guess it would be the same

F-2 Speedy 07-03-2019 10:38 AM

how did you bleed air from the system when you installed it, single ram, dual ram, single engine or 2....completely new system would take several quarts of fluid to fill

daniel475 07-03-2019 11:01 AM

dual rams , single motor , yes it look a lot to initially prime it , the steering WAS working then my old merc power steering pump leaked so I thought I would replace it which I did , filled the new automotive one pretty much to the top obv could have been a little air in there , gonna try cracking rams at the back to see if there is any air ....

https://www.cpperformance.com/p-2650...ring-pump.aspx , ordered one of these to at least bypass if it is a power steering pump issue

Wobble 07-03-2019 11:52 AM

if you have an inline filter, try bypassing it. My system came with one on the pressure side and was a major restriction, magnet in the reservoir is sufficient.

daniel475 07-03-2019 12:24 PM

thank you I will try that for sure , was told that something may need to be drilled to increase flow? anyone have any idea what this might be

where the high pressure line comes out of the pump there is a big nut, the oriface is part of the assy that comes out with the big nut.

I sent the same thing over to Daniel via PM. I had to do this on my Latham system.

the rams are under pressure from the helm at rest so dont get a face full.....:D

sounds good thanks for the advice gonna rip it apart AGAIN and drill the hole bigger , so ram hard over then crack the line at the back on the ram that's fully extended , im really losing patience really hope this fixes it

You'll love it when it's done. I did a poker run in my 311 last weekend... what a difference! The washing machine pretty much had no affect on the boat's direction, point and go! We also road back home about twenty-five miles across the Chesapeake Bay.... sitting at the helm barely even working the wheel... straight as an arrow!

You'll get it right Daniel.

F-2 Speedy 07-03-2019 02:59 PM

Is the steering running through a cooler before the fluid returns to the pump, where are you located, maybe someone on here could help out

daniel475 07-03-2019 03:04 PM

located just outside of Vancouver British Columbia Canada , in Gibsons BC , I believe it is yes what are you thinking ill have to double check that , count down is on leaving next week for lake chelan poker run ! really hoping I get it figured

F-2 Speedy 07-03-2019 03:11 PM

Well, BC is just a bit far from KS , personally I think there's air in the system, took me three tries to get my ITS jammin.....like TomZ said when its rite you're stylin like a Caddi

daniel475 07-03-2019 03:12 PM

sounds good what is the best procedure to bleed this system

ezstriper 07-04-2019 07:32 AM

Ok, not to jack this thread but my son's 32AT doing the exact same thing. When he bought the boat was that way, found a B/S setup fitting on the pressure side of the pump, removed that and no change, so figured it had killed the pump. just had engines out to service and replaced pump with a 99 1 ton hydro boost truck pump(used these before) kept the pressure relief valve and spring from original pump(have not idea what they had on it) anyway no change super stiff. He replaces the filter again no change. I understand how the setup works and have installed whole setups before. its a twin B/B full system...thanks Rob

daniel475 07-04-2019 05:18 PM

Rob not sure if this is the same issue but I had the flow valve installed wrong , I had it flow valve then spring then banjo fitting , it suppose to go spring , flow valve flat side of the flow valve up towards the banjo fitting , then bango fitting , I also drilled out the hole in the banjo fitting to 5/32 mine was only 1/8 , txt me ill send you a pic of how the assembly should go 16047417748
