Mercury blue paint

I found some old threads on this, seeing if there is something new on the market ?? is this still available

Mercury Racing 92-8228251 Paint Bright Blue Metallic

dcb 10-28-2019 03:27 PM

It is also a GM color - 1981 bright blue, gm code 20, GM B8110A

F-2 Speedy 10-28-2019 03:52 PM

Does this need to be mixed ? Im looking for some in a spray can, google search takes me to OSO

TomZ 10-28-2019 04:37 PM

I read somewhere that Chrysler PB3 was close.

Intense Blue - Duplicolor BCC0422

I bought a couple cans. A test spray on some cardboard was really close to matching the color on my valve covers.

Could be worth a shot.

TomZ 10-28-2019 04:39 PM

https://www.mniboats.com/Mercury-Rac...-p/8228251.htm

$36 per can.

TomZ 10-28-2019 05:08 PM

WA9544 - GM Quasar Blue (Code 80) may also be close.

F-2 Speedy 10-28-2019 06:36 PM

thanks for the help guys

Yes it does need to be mixed, but you should be able to find it in duplicolor with a paint code.

TomZ 10-29-2019 06:49 AM

The Duplicolor options might get you close, but if you’re looking for a match that’s available quickly, I’d give the $36/can option, or at least give them a call to see what’s up.

I might buy a couple cans myself.

I asked for a refund. I thought that it was odd that I even had to ask when the the item was NLA... hopefully I don’t continue the missing $$$ trend that plagues the industry

endeavor1 10-29-2019 08:10 AM

Refund sent and the owner of the website called me and apologized for the item being NLA. He gave me the GM code which is listed above. I thought that’s pretty fair service. Finally a good story from the industry

Cool...did he give you 1981 GM code 20 ?

endeavor1 10-29-2019 09:14 AM

Yes he did.

You forgot code:
$$$Merc$$$: For Merc Blue Upcharge. :lolhit:

TomZ 10-29-2019 10:14 AM

Another OSO member mentioned in posting on this subject that Dodge Viper GTS Blue (paint code PBE) was pretty much a match. A spray bomb version is probably available through the Viper Store.

I think the issue here is Mercury doesn't have it.

Nice find, I'm stopping by the paint store after work and getting some put in a can so I can test it on a stick, might need to put a silver base under it if its to dark as a bud of mine suggested

Missed the point.
That is part of the original Factory paint code :)

I called Whipple Superchargers and they told me its a 2 stage powder coating process they put on the blowers, he did state Wiffle blue ( no type o ) as one powder but didn't have the other color, so I'm thinking the paint will need a silver base under the blue, maybe the paint store has a spectrometer lol

TomZ 10-29-2019 01:01 PM

Here's an older thread with relevant information: https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...lue-paint.html

In particular it is mentioned that a white or silver basecoat is needed to prevent the paint from going on dark.

Looks like there are a few ways to skin this cat:

Duplicolor Metalcast with tips on application:

https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...metalcast.html

Silver Anodized Metalcast Ground Coat - MC100
Blue Anodized Metalcast - MC201

Gets pretty close.

I'm done searching! ;)

I have used a combo of bomb cans and had an exact match, the problem is that off the shelf paint does not hold up at all. I dissolves if any fuel or chemical that gets on it and chips easy. Anything that will hold up would be from an automotive paint store and they put it in a bomb can.
