Intake

Looking for opinions on what intake to run. 489 bbc with Merlin rectangle port heads. We are cruising type people and not top end run wide open really. My gut says dual plane high rise but looks like a lot of guys are running the dart singe plane. I want max tourqe at like 3200 3500rpm for cruising speed. Just seeing what you all thought would be best. Thanks.

The edelbrock Air Gap is pretty tough to beat.

Edelbrock perfomer rpm is good, the zz502 gm version is essentially the same. In a dyno test here a year and half ago a friend had a 502 w edelbrock 290 oval port heads, pretty small cam. He bought a vic jr as they seem to be popular, afrs on a few cylinders like #8 were over 2 points leaner (carbed). motor peaked below 5500. We bolted a ported standard performer intake on and picked up somewhere around 20 to 30 ft lbs tq and almost 10 hp (on top), #3 cyl at wot was over 2.5 points leaner than the average of other ones though. We took it off and put agm zz502 intake on which looks identical to me to a perfomer rpm and picked up even more tq, thruout whole range and a small hp gain on top. down in the 3600 to 4500 range I think overall he picked up around 50 ft lbs over open plenum. I will say this though, the vic jr was bolted on out of the box and had smaller ports than the heads , the zz502 intake was stock too, Smitty

Always nice to see real back to back tests 👍. So in mild 502 builds you are fine even with the performer intake. J lingefelter 502 peanut port engine made over 500hp at 5000rpm with stock edel performer intake and zz454 roller cam. have always had good luck with rpm airgap manifolds in my small blocks, they make good torque from idle to max rpm. Going to dyno test my peanut port head 502 during this winter, with edel rpm squre bore or weiand 8123 spread bore, oval port intakes, hopefully both intakes. Results can be seen in my 454 peanut port build topic.

We ran/tested the ported standard performer intake because my dyno partner had one from a motor home laying on shelf at his shop (so it was free). anything it does for most part, a performer rpm does better. Because we saw 15.5-1 afr on #3 cylinder at wot when others were12.5 to 13-1, I personally would never use one on something that gets held at WOT, the cylinder to cylinder distribution was much better on the performer rpm in my experience, Smitty

Anyone tried the cheaper speedmaster air gap duel plane? I got a line on a cheap one of those. I’m sure it’s not as nice as Edelbrock but at a 1/3 cost I can live with it.

Here is one on River Dave's Place. He is asking too much, I offered him $350 shipped and he responded with about $400. I found one on Craigslist locally for $200, New and Polished.
Good Luck.

Or better yet $328 shipped new from Jegs

There ain’t nothing on Craigslist around here. I will probably just go with new.
