Power steering Cooler, Do i need one

Yes you absolutely do need a cooler in that system
in fact mercury is having issues with the new sterndrive engine line up that all have inline coolers with the pumps having such excessive heat they are smoking to the point of starting a fire so mercury came up with an update to replace the stock pulley with a pulley with four large cooling holes
so to answer your question the answer is yes

I have temp indicating strips on a lot of stuff including power steering resevoir and have never seen anything above 120* (6000rpm and one heavy boat )
Don`t know what Mercury is doing wrong but have em call me, I can walk em thru it

I ran a couple years without a cooler, 6500 RPM engines, cruise @ 5000. I wouldn't recommend it on someone else's boat, but I did it. As ICPPLPEEING noted, I also use thermo-strips on components and never saw anything excessive that I was worried about. I also used transmission fluid for power steering fluid.
