Mercruiser HEI Rotors 2-types what is the difference
 

Hello,

I am looking for a little more information regarding Mercruiser Delco HEI ignition rotors.

I see there are two types of rotors-
1997 and older part #808483Q1
1998 and newer part # 808483Q2

As far as I know both distributer caps are the same?
obviously the appearance is different on both rotors
But what is the actually difference between the rotors other than appearance if any? are they both interchangeable?
What would happen if the wrong one was installed?

Any explanation on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

There is reasons for the 2 different rotors with the caps. Will add the rotor on the bottom looks to be of good quality. Those can be an issue sometimes or even straight out of the box.

here is what I did with the rotors. The white rotor inwhich is not a bad rotor in this pic but here is what I done for a improved design the dark color rotor in the second pic below. . You can see the differences in the pics. Some beefier frame work and supporting the actual rotor itself.

channel supports for the rotor itself. This keeps it straight and no movement. That's the issue I was seeing on customers boats a lot of the times. Had to figure all this out. Anyways a good tech tip for checking the rotors and looking at quality and whats not.. I am trying to be a problem solver in the industry freakin one part at a time

rotors are interchangeable,,I like the second rotor(bigger one),it has air blades on the bottom that circulates air inside the cap,this helps keep the ignition module cooler.especially if some one modified the spark dwell table in the mefi program,that was a fun one to find.

For jist to add the LARGEST ROUND rotor is only for 1998 AND UP --- Mercruiser using the EST distributor. That comes from OEM MERC Info for that install.


Also the rotor style has a lot to do with venting out the ion gases that form under the distributor cap for jist. There is a lot more info about all that and rotor style and of course HEAT as well. But the worst HEAT and MOISTURE comes from heat soak when the engine is shut down / cool down for that period of time ---- then restarting the engine to have that process happen all over again ( cool to hot ).

Also dependent on bottom distributor plate vent holes or NOT. If the hot air and ion gases under the cap has no place to go then its just moving around heated air. and actually creating more ion gases. That's one of the reasons the distributor cap for the EST ignition set up does not use a gasket / oring to seal the cap to distributor. Its a place to offer some venting by NOT sealing it up 100 percent.. The Mercruiser Thunderbolt (IV & V) cap uses a gasket to seal all that for jist. Anyways for a jist of info instead of a page worth of info.


Recap some info and again the small rotor is for 1997 and back EST ignition set ups and the LARGE Round rotor is for 1998 and above. MERCruiser INFO.


Next recap if you have the small rotor YOU HAVE TO CHECK THE rotor itself for movement. IT SHOUD NOT move period NEVER when NEW or USED condition. THERE HAS BEEN ISSUES with that moving even brand new out of the box. Trust me I know and letting whomever else know.

humm,,I seemed to have put distributors that I had from my 93 gmc bbc,they went into my boat and I used the large rotors.as far as I've seen,all hei est distr. are the same.caps and rotors.

I am talking about Mercruiser stock set ups and its even posted on their ignition part kits listing the application per what that states. I am passing on OEM MERC info. Here I just pulled the Merc kit and what Merc recommends even on their package. PIC in the next reply.
