Has anyone done a 500 efi or 525 efi clone with the 3.8 Whipple?
Chris

I didn’t look up but what was the outcome? Sounds like fun.

Were they clones or did they come from Merc?

The 3.8's are super efficient and some may be disapponted when they wind them up, because they are so quiet. You really can't hear them at all like the ones before, which is a good thing because they aren't producing a lot of heat. My 525 efi's whith the 3.8's dyno'd 830 hp @ 7.8 lbs of boost and can go to 11lbs if wanted. Only downfall for me is my factory cooling on the 525's is really good for up to 900 hp, so i'll never fully use all the boost I have. This is just a reference for the 3.8 whipple question.

Mine were the factory 525 EFI's that were tired and needed refreshing. So we decided to give them a little more power when I found out the new 3.8's had been released. My compression is 8:1 on these engines and they are so efficient we are using a 3 3/4 pulley and getting 7.8lbs boost.

That sounds like “run hard” “trouble free” boating right there. What kind of afr’s and egt’s? You could probably bump it up to 8.5 + without issues but why…. If you and engines both happy 😃. Must have woke your boat up nice. 👍👍👍

Thoughts?

I didn't know you had Dart Iron Eagles. I would keep your AFR pretty conservative to help keep detonation down. If you're running close to 12:1 AFR with those heads you could run into detonation issues. I'd probably run 11.6-11.8 with those heads, that's just me. If you take compression down, you'll need to increase boost to match what you had. It might help with the bigger blower but more blower speed also increases heat and combine that with steel heads in an endurance engine.
