Default 598 longevity question

So Iím looking at a boat that has a fresh 598 in it. Making around 800hp. Whatís the life expectancy? How often for a refresh? How much for a refresh? Whatís included? What kind of maintenance to prolong as long as possible? Itís a single application on a 5700lb boat. Plan on running it at cruise speeds majorly of the time, per the wife.

No way to say for sure. I would say leak down tests every year and valve train refresh at 150 hours and go from there.

You need to know the details on the pieces and parts. What block and mains, crank, rods, fasteners, etc. Cam lobe profiles are most critical as valve train is usually the first to wear out. Aluminum rockers or stainless Pro Magnum, spring steel material. I have also seen some valve guides wear prematurely due to defective materials from a big name brand.

Could be five minutes or five hundred hours depending on who built it and with what parts. Since itís ďfreshly rebuiltĒ the builder of the engine should be able to give you the info that youíre looking for. If thereís no paper trail on the rebuild then the engine is worth just a percentage of the parts at best.

she is new to boats. First speed limit was 50, went 65 and she didnít notice. I think itís just a fear thing. Loud boat etc. Iím moving up in size so it handles these nasty waters better. Thatís most of the issue. She has a bad neck and the lay one was beating her up

I get it , just tell her you need to stay out of the peak TQ range which is usually cruise, that`s when $hit happens. You need run the boat as close to WOT as possible so that you don`t hurt the engine

When my wife starts to get scared I start hearing dan Dan DAn DAN! so I turn off her headset

My wife talks a good story, we won't go fast etc. But once we get going she's the one giving me the wave to drop the hammer. We were cruising along about 65 and another boat passed us and she gave me the look like are you going to let that happen. Of course her daily driver is a 600+ hp Callaway Corvette.
