Is this a good method to set timming?

I have a thread going" 502 gen 5 carbed need help w/ rebuild" but have a different question. When I am done and have a few hours on it, broke in, I was thinking of buying an old alum prop, cutting off some blade to get 5000 rpms while strapped to the trailer. With a friend at the throttle and distrib. backed off a bit, run to full thr. and slowly advance the dist till no more increase in rpm then maybe back off a little and lock her down. Opinions?

Please video tape this. :party-smiley-004:

:eekdrop::eekdrop::eekdrop::eekdrop:Based on what you posted:eekdrop::eekdrop::eekdrop::eekdrop:
........my advice is step back away from the engine and do not touch anything. Take it to somebody who knows what they are doing.

I think that`s a great plan!

Hold my beer and watch this!

3/4 race cams like 6000+ rpm, best cut off another blade.

getrdunn 03-08-2021 08:53 AM

Kinda like the ol 3/4 race race cam guys would set their timing on a car. One in the driver seat with a foot on the throttle and one foot on the brake. A buddy rotating the distributor until the tires would brake lose. Yup sheeee's all good. 😂

I think that is a great idea, kind of reminds me of this one.

Great plan.

niteridder64 03-08-2021 10:44 AM

Guess I won't be trying that. Was just an idea.

getrdunn 03-08-2021 01:47 PM

It’s all good. We got a grin anyway! 😂.

lol. Nice someone (you) can see this as being ribbed. We are all doing it in fun.

Are you sure we can’t double dare you to do it ? :wink

What ignition are you running ? If tbolt, which module ?

phragle 03-08-2021 04:29 PM

With boat under load keep advancing timing untill motor suddenly stops. REbuild motor and set the ting 3.5 degrees less than that, your golden.

I am thinking of replacing my carb w/ a Holley efi syst, not much more $ than a carb. If I had an MSD module it would link to the efi and make small adjustment to the timing. I just bought this dist 3 years ago so it;s going back in.

niteridder64 03-08-2021 07:00 PM

I have enjoyed all the joking around but seriously what would be the best way to set timing after she is all together? 502 .060 over, GM intake 6269318, cam TBD could use some help here, told my builder to call Bob Madara at Marine Kinetics. CMI e top s/s headers, and possibly a Holley efi in a 27 Power Quest Laser

I thought "Bob Cams" were able to set their own timing!

Holley Sniper EFI with a dual sync to control timing would be the way to go, but you can just get the coil drive and a standard coil. It's somewhere on this page. https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...version-9.html
or https://www.holley.com/blog/post/how...ection_system/

Dyno...
Or, set timing conservative, make a run. Add 2 more degress, make run. Add 1-2 more degrees, make another run. And so on...

phragle 03-08-2021 09:58 PM

cant go wrong going to the dyno to sort out what a new build wants.

Best advice I can give you and your builder is do not ever call Bob for anything engine related .

Set timing with a timing light.

So, what is the common consensus for the OP - 32 or 34 degrees total ?

I ran 34 deg for several years (hard). 9.5:1 with iron heads and never ever had an issue. Jetting was even slightly on the lean side and was with MR43t’s and stock TB ignition. Just a FYI.

For a cam just run the 741 or 731. What exhaust? I may have missed that...

Heads matter too. It may be in his other build thread... haven't looked.

And just to add... I got a real kick out of this thread! Thanks for the Tuesday lunchtime grins!
