The 8.1/496 and 8.2/502 are completely different. Most parts won't interchange.
Did your Volvo 8.1 not have closed cooling like Merc 496's???

"Freeze plugs" are not meant to protect the engine. The holes they are pressed in are used for casting the engine block. They just happen to get pushed out when the water/weak coolant freezes. In most cases, if they pop out, then there is a good chance the block also cracked.

Could sell your heads to get some back

That actually looks like a good deal and probably the best deal actually!

Can you use the heads?

If so, you can get a forged short block from Raylar for like $5500. If you are already in there, do the cam and rockers and you have a bulletproof Mag HO.

It’s completely trashed. Water in the oil. Cracks on the outside. Cracks on the manifolds and risers. Water coming out everywhere.

I called Raylar last week and spoke to Larry. He said to just get their 511 setup and find a block. Take it to a local machine shop and then go from there. I was on board with that till I found the 8.2. Less on board with that with the link above to the 8.1 at Michigan.

Also, scour Craigslist, offer up and eBay for 8.1 496. I have done the swap with used truck short blocks TWICE. The only difference is the bellhousing bolts were SAE, not metric.

Theres several on eBay right now. Maybe even a local U-pull and pay junkyard.

good info! Thank you!

lol I wish I could swap it before lunch!

no closed cooling. I may try to change that when it goes back together.

Damn...that sucks.

I know that BOATU.S. and other maritime organizations always show the 'southern states' as the ones with the highest freeze damage claims, due to the typically milder winters.

I had a bilge heater, but the marina lost power for 4 days of negative degrees. Not that it would’ve been ok in those temps anyway.

i have repaired a bunch of frozen blocks and then beat them hard none have ever failed food for thought

I’ll be curious as to how many people advertising 8.1’s actually have them. I’ve heard Backorders in the 30-40 range most places. Try finding a 5.7 or 5.0 from a reputable remanufacturer right now.

Curious what the plan for a lot of these boats with cracked blocks are this year. Wonder how many people will just dump the boat due to lack of engine availability/timeframe

Yeah...I was kind of making a play on words there.
About...oh, 50 years ago now, when I was a kid my best friend's dad had a repair shop...ran a lot of engines through there in its heydey...anyway, Marvin (the owner) would pay my friend and I $5 a day in the summer to tear down the engines he'd pulled from vehicles. I saw a handful of cracked blocks, saw a lot of popped out freeze plugs, too. Regardless of the condition, Marvin would always have us pull the old freeze plugs out and install new ones...a PITA, frankly.

I wish it had just sunk. Much easier insurance claim.

nobody knew the power was going to go out for extended amounts of time. My little bilge heater worked pretty good, when it had power.

it was so cold, the 12 pack of cokes in the fridge busted the whole top of the can off!

this ones cracked on the inside, the outside and everywhere in between. The whole cove that the marina is in froze. It’s definitely unprecedented!

No, as stated above 8.1 and 8.2 dont interchange. Buy a junkyard 8.1 from 3/4 chevy or gmc (looking like $2100) and some good exhaust, swap it in and run it for the season. Next year you can get it machined with a cam and whatever other mods you're planning. No use loosing a season of boating.
