Called the company that we bought the carburators from, they said absolutely don't put it on the ignition coil, as that could draw enough power to weaken your spark. I don't know if that's true or not, but right now I'm finding a way to tap into the purple alternator wire. I tuned the idle screws a while back to mercruiser preliminary adjustments, worried I might have messed something up there as well.

You didn’t hook the power wire of electric choke to the ignition coil, did you ? Is anything else hooked to coil ? Is there 12volts at ignition coil + ? Is there 2 purple wires there or ?
How long did this boat sit ? Did you do a fuel sample ?
If timing or something else in ignition is off, tuning a carb is meaningless.
