1989 mercruiser 454 magnum
I have a 1989 Sea Ray Pachanga I acquired last summer. The engine is the 330 hp Mercruiser 454 magnum. The engine has only 114 original hours on it and was garage kept. I am getting water in the oil. BTW I replaced all the fluids before first use. The previous ( original) owner swears this was not an issue that the last time they used it. She ran fine. I dont think it is the block because the brief time we ran her she held good oil pressure, did not stumble, maintained temp. I am hoping it is the gaskets in the riser. my question is replacing those gaskets do the get torqued to a specific tolerance?

Don't think its a riser gaset. If it was you could pull plugs and at least one would be wet
Drain the block, plug all the hoses at the thermostat housing and install a gauge and schrader valve on one of the ports. Pressurize to 15 psi or so and see if it holds.
If it does hold, test oil cooler on the oil side to 60 psi

Do you have an alpha or bravo drive?? 87 and part of 88 I believe merc hooke the 330hp 454 to an alpha and called it a magnum.
Its NOT what many condiser a true mag... It had a cast crank little rods and small oval port heads, In other words a standard 454, Real 454 mags have a forged crank, bigger rods and rectangle port heads and made 385 hp.

Like this plan. Alldodge......and yes if was a riser issue,,u would have a wet plug..
330 hp had all standard or small parts,,as mentioned heads crank etc...
And yes could be oil cooler,,as i just found oil on the lake water side of my oil cooler,,thank god its like in my motor,,as i have closed coolant system..
3 years mr cool 700 cooler gone bad,,,wont be buying from them again
good luck...

Imo not oil cooler. Oil pressure should be higher than water pressure. If it was leaking, the oil would be getting in the water side, not water into the oil.
