Oil Filters

Anyone using this filter in place of the Wix 51222R. Looking for something with a lower micron rating but that will still do the job. The specs look about the same.

Wow, great research. That will not fit and its like 35 dollars, cost is not the issue however.

Sorry the link was not working, try this one.

Link is still not working. I may have to delete the post.

No problem, anytime . It is a direct cross reference. I'm sorry that I misspoke on the cost. It is $10.34...

Eddie Young built my motor and he said to use 51060R (61 micron with drain back valve). The motor is not in a dirty environment like a auto

Rookie 05-13-2022 11:36 AM

Damn, you have the 1-1/2" thread? I guess all of the cross reference places are wrong. I believe we ran those in the race boat. It was a pain finding filters for the non-standard BBC filter head. I believe we ran a Fram filter. I'll see if there are some still laying around.

performance engineering did my motors and said not to use the racing filters as they were meant to be changed say after every race in a car car. ive tried both and never noticed any pressure changes so why not go with the better filtration?

now i'm really confused.......

Yes I have aftermarket 1 1/2"-12 threads on my housing. The charts are wrong, its like banging your head against a wall. The Donaldson I found was for a Big Cummings engine but looked like it would work. I can get that with my Amsoil Account.

Wally 05-13-2022 01:33 PM

Ive seen some Baldwin filters go down to 9.8 micron...
Just wondering why you want to go so small?

Go with what your builder said

Everyone has opinions, mine is, I like better filtration but with a high volume oil pump its moving a lot of oil. Reducing the particle size may reduce flow (don't know). Going smaller may need to use 2 filters in parallel to keep the flow up

20 micron seems to be the standard, Wix racing is 60 micron.

jeffswav 05-22-2022 10:02 AM

After doing a bunch of research the Fram HP6A seems to be the best filter for the bigger 1.5"-12 filter threads. 20 micron rating, 20 psi relief valve with a screen, thicker metal. The standard filter by Fram is low quality cardboard, however this one seems to be built he best.

ThisIsLivin 05-23-2022 07:28 AM

I use the Donaldson P550832 from Amsoil. It has the flow of the racing filters and super fine filtration, the best of both worlds.

That has the standard chevy thread size, no ?

OP has something totally different.

I used to use that one, I now have a 1.5"-12 stud. Completely different filter. Been looking for a cross reference to Donaldson or Amsoil with no luck. The Fram HP6a seems to be the best.

Yep, wrong stud size. I still have one sitting on the shelf.

Saw another post on FB that compared micron rating, flow rate and pressure from an episode of Engine Masters where they tested a bunch of them. I used to run the Wix Racing 51222R and switched to the K&N HP-5001.

I'm just going with what Eddie said

I'm also have high volume pump pushing 75 psi at idle when all warmed up

K&N HP series looks good also.

We use Mercury racing…nothing fancy. Probably overpriced for what they are. But we’ve never had an issue. Knock on wood

They only print labels, filter is made by another company. Not sure who, someone here probably knows.

mike38scarab 05-26-2022 09:57 AM

Someone on here did a comparison with pictures of a Merc filter vs. Wix 51222R.
Tear down of both filters. They are exactly the same filter. Different sticker, different price.

1MOSES1 05-26-2022 10:15 AM

makes me feel warm and fuzzy that it says Mercury racing on the label!!!!

:lolhit:
