500efi - injector tick

Fairly certain it’s common…just wanted to get feedback from fellow 500 efi owners. Or anyone else who has been in a bilge with the 500efi running.

aside from the swoosh sound from intake. I can hear all the injectors ticking as it runs. Normal?

Revelocity 05-26-2022 08:08 AM

Nope - never heard any noticeable ticking but honestly did not put my ear close to them! If they are the original injectors(?) you may want to have them tested as they have been known to fail with age and potentially cause engine problems. There are some threads from ~4 years ago on the 500 EFI injector topic.

1MOSES1 05-26-2022 08:26 AM

I didn’t record sound…will next time I’m near the boat. Sounds similar to this. I read the threads you are talking about. Problem is there are no known direct replacements. And chances are if we do clean and test them they will fail. So not sure what to do

liberator221 05-26-2022 08:30 AM

No experience with 500EFI but pretty certain I hear injectors ticking in my 502Mag. Very noticeable in fuel rail with stethoscope.
Been under hood of many automobiles that you could hear injectors

Sydwayz 05-26-2022 09:04 AM

Yes, it is normal for them to tick. It's a solenoid opening and closing.
You can send them here to be cleaned and checked out:

It's a wise investment. On my race car, I even send brand new injectors to my flow testing buddy before they go into the car. He has found bad NEW injectors.

I heard this and said what the hell....... then i realized this is the exact noise i get from my Corvette...... was positive i had a bad valve spring, never considered "injector tick"

the issue as mentioned…if there are bad injectors. Which is highly likely…not sure what to do about it. Aftermarket direct replacement injectors are not available. To my knowledge.

So just send them out and have them cleaned and rebuilt. Chances are the components are replaceable. Most are very similar. BUP aka John at the link I mentioned is a straight shooter. He'll tell you your options.

I’ve been in contact with BUP for the last 2-3 years. He used to have direct replacements but Bosch stopped making them. So now he is trying to source new ones.

I know he is banned. So I’ll keep people posted. For anyone interested.

John, (The link Sdywayz posted) has direct replacement injectors for the HP500 EFI motors. It took him a long time but he finally found some.

EDIT:
Just read the comment above,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that sucks.

F-2 Speedy 05-26-2022 12:12 PM

send them to Smitty on here, I and others have sent several sets to him for rebuilds and flow testing and they always come back tuned up,

Rookie 05-26-2022 12:29 PM

Smitty, (arcticfriends) is my go to for injector services.

DrFeelgood 05-26-2022 02:26 PM

Smitty did my 502 Mag injectors last month.

Gimme Fuel 05-26-2022 02:50 PM

Smitty is the man when it comes to MEFI and injectors!

Running his tune and injectors in my MPI's and they have been awesome.

Eh, they ended up not being very "direct" come to find out, on leaner side of equation actually.

oh great. That’s re-assuring

articfriends 05-26-2022 08:59 PM

I tested a set of injectors from a slightly lean detonated 500 efi a year or 2 ago that were Bosch 36.5 lb 3800/3.8 supercharged injectors that were sent to me, the engine re-builder (panther- Geronimo 36 Frank at FU marine ) who was fixing the detonated motor said his customer had bought them from a guy who said they were a "dead match" with "exact characteristics" of the OEM injector and had "hundreds of sets out there", I don't HOWEVER, know WHO that guy was that sold them to him as there are a lot of people selling injectors. What I DO know is whoever it was, they took the time to grind the numbers off each of them with a pencil grinder as to keep anyone from figuring out what they were and they were close in some places and lean/rich as much as 15 to 20% in other so nowhere near a "dead" match, Ive never found any injector thats a "dead" match for a 500 efi, found ones that were close but IMO a re-tune is only safe way to switch. When Frank had that stock 500 finished and tuned it I remember him telling me it needed more fuel in quite a few places in tune and he was surprised as they are normally rich
For OPs question, I hear injectors tick sometimes on my dyno when exhaust is on it, if there ticking, there working fwiw

SB 05-26-2022 09:14 PM

Wow.

1MOSES1 05-26-2022 09:37 PM

thanks for the info artic…I suppose my only option would be a re-tune and new injectors.

not surprised they run rich…

articfriends 05-26-2022 09:53 PM

But does your boat currently have any problems besides the injector tick your hearing which is pretty much normal? I wouldnt run out and change things all around if not needed, I'd just have your injectors flowed and tested if you have any concerns, I do offer that service on my state of the art ASNU machine BUT any qualified shop that has a decent machine , knows how to do them properly and takes time to do it right can do them for you so lots of choices there, maybe even some place local to you.If boat runs fine, plugs look good, id have them tested in off season and just drive it

liberator221 05-27-2022 04:18 AM

OP articfriends did my injectors this winter. Great guy to deal with. Just ship them to him, when you have the time.

MMatt28 06-01-2022 06:50 PM

Before I had my stock 500EFI rebuilt by Jason, he used 36 lb injectors and did a flash retune. It worked really well and it was easy.

how much is the kit. How difficult is it to do the programming?

MMatt28 06-02-2022 07:14 AM

I purchased this from Jason about 3 seasons ago. It was $1000 at the time (included new flowed/checked injectors, injector clips, and reflash of ECM). Since I was local to Jason, I towed my boat to him and he re-flashed the computer.
