700sci rebuild thoughts
Hi everyone
little advice would be appreciated. I have a 700sci and while starting it would have a very slow start and then fired up. It worked fine when running. I assumed something was wrong with the engines so I pulled them, pressure tested the header and found a leak and could see they had eaten the head. Salt water boat. I opened up the engine and one cylinder had salt water and slight ruswhile all the others are fine my mechanic has recommended to me to just polish and not bore the cylinder wall and to only change one piston for a standard size and wait for later to do a complete rebuild. He also wants to change the bearings etc.. we are also doing the top ends as the leak down showed the exhaust and intake were leaking what would be your thoughts on this I see his point of view where he doesn’t think it’s required to do a full surgery at this point as the bottoms are fine and compression was good. Engine has 250 hours. I have attached a couple photos https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...39f43b2ab.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...813fb1fe0.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...e927d0637.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...2784c3a87.jpeg |
Depends on how long you’re willing to have it laid up. I’d be leaning more towards just doing the whole thing now.

you might consider changing out the rockers also, another 700 sci

Re-do the whole thing while it’s apart would be my vote. it’ll be good for another 300 hours which is 12 years by your math.

Looking at these pictures I'd go with full rebuilds.. spend some now or more later...

Theyre already out ,might as well just go all the way

Check parts supply chain and make decision if you want to boat this year.
