Default Exhaust manifold gaskets, using actual gaskets or high temp RTV?

What are you guys using on your manifolds to the head for gaskets? I know on the turbo cars I just use High temp orange RTV and it works best, never blows out. I was planning to go this route on the boat as well but I wanted to see what you guys like to go with?

Ive used both good quality gaskets and high temp rtv over the years. Never had rtv fail

Hi temp copper, red, orange, black silicone adhesive, even clear silicone...never a leak. Haven't used a gasket on any exhaust manifold or header in at least 20yrs.

I have Lightning headers and use both and no leaks, going on 10 years.

Any chance that using a gasket could introduce reversion? If straight up RTV works best, that may prevent some failures some have run into. One of our guys is dealing with that right now - heads need to be redone on some really nice engines because of it.

Could be an interesting discussion!

Do you guys use both gaskets and RTV at once? It looks like my previous owner did and didnt have any issues - I just picked up some exhaust wedges and another 2 gaskets, but if RTV is better I may just go that route!

May have done way back in the day but when using silicone I just put a bead around the port and let it flash off for 1/2 or so before bolting up header or manifold. As mentioned in a bind I’ve used whatever kind/color is on the shelf without failure. Ideally use a couple threaded rods for lining up and drawing up evenly.

Exhaust leaks can cause reversion.

Yep, for sure. If a gasket can create a risk, then maybe best to leave them out.
