Oil pan and gasket issue
 

My build is so close. I’ve been set back because of more health issues with my wife. Current problem I’m having is the oil pan and oil pan gasket. They aren’t long enough.

it doesn’t seal at all. The gasket is supposed to go over the timing chain cover and the oil pan over it. This current setup there is no seal and oil is gonna splash all over making a huge mess.
where did I go wrong? I thought gaskets and oil pans were universal for fitment.

GM makes Mark IV, Gen V and Gen VI, which one do you have ? you can't interchange them.

I'm guessing you have a Gen5 block.

Looks like the wrong oil pan too or the wrong front cover. What is the block casting number ?

yes it’s a mark V. I’ll look at the casting number tomorrow.

Not to change the subject but I have a question around capacity. The pan that SB listed is the 1-pc seal pan used on GEN VI 454/502 engines - the description shows eight quarts capacity, but the capacity listed from Merc is seven quarts including the filter. That seems really low considering the cooler and lines. Of course, Merc's description states that these are approximate amounts. Interesting - the previous generation specs out at eight quarts (and they use the same pan that's given in SB's post above).

I'm using these pans on my 509s but after filling up the cooler, lines (AN -10), and filter, I'm well past that point. I always run them at the full level on the dipsticks and change out about nine quarts at each change including the filter. Am I overfilling?

Any thoughts?

If it is a GEN 5 block then I think the issue might be the timing cover, not the oil pan. The Gen 5 & 6 covers go back further and have a groove for the oil pan gasket to fit into. The front cover he has is for the MK IV engines. I don't think there is any way to make it work.
