My vote is a cam swap and whipple it....then you don't have to worry about how the heads flow....however I have not had my boat consistently running more than a few weeks over the last few years so I guess I'm the bad advice committee hahahaha
As others have said...I would leave it unless you're doing something drastic like adding a blower. You can honestly probably play with labbing props and get a couple more MPH and be cheaper than more engine mods on a perfectly good running engine
Just my opinions lol

Good call on the prop. I could use a few more RPM and have it dialed in. Out of the box B1 28p.

Honestly your XR is likely on borrowed time as it is with your HP and TQ numbers however I see your point. That's the dilemma I was in when I started upgrading and to me knowing what I know now....I would EFI swap it with ignition control, try a -2 which was mentioned in your initial post, and play with props. You will have better drivability and maybe even squeeze a couple ponies out of timing adjustments as you could be a little more aggressive with EFI and with the lower/props I wouldn't be surprised to see the couple MPH gain you are wanting. Just an opinion of a guy with a neverending project hahaha. Looking back I should have just sat down and said this is what my plan is and execute from the beginning instead of trying to patch it together enough to use it for a bit just to take longer overall. Spent way more money than I should have and have been basically boatless for a few years because of it. You have a great base to go off of from the sounds of it and now that the base engine is built and running well from the sounds of it I personally would leave it alone minus the upgrades I mentioned....EFI, lower, and props.

I’ve received some solid advice on this thread and like the idea of some other tweaks versus tearing into a fresh build.
I wanted 80, basically there. Now wants 85 lol

I was told by some reliable sources that the 29 single and 27 didn't gain anything with a shorty lower. Most cases they lost mph. I can't say this is true in all cases but it was true with a guy I know that had a 27.
