In my opinion, the BBC valvetrain geometry is decent - only a 4° cant angle, the exhaust lifter bores are angled 6.25° from the intakes to account for the different valve angles. Not too bad.

Sure, the lifters are a bit undersized, but the aftermarket makes bigger lifters.

A Chrysler LA or Magnum engine's valvetrain? Total disaster in comparison.

I've heard the Dodge V8 cams were raised too high into the block and doesn't get enough splash oil.

I'm referring to the lifter bore angles on the small blocks specifically. Going back to the "A" engine, made to complement the Plymouth Polyspherical head, the lifter bore angle was 57° from vertical. When the wedge head for the LA engine was produced, the lifter bore angle was never changed - it wasn't changed on the Magnum block, either.

I don't think the RB engines had this situation.

The BBC has much better lifter bore angles in comparison!

I thought the cathedral intake ports were the main deal of the LS’s power???

Flatter valve angles, raised ports. 12-15* vs the SBCs 23. That’s the most important part. Valvetrain stability improved to handle the requisite RPMs.
