Flywheel install adatper/cone???
Finally warm here in Wyoming. I’m finishing the last pieces of the build. I ran into a problem though. Flywheel doesn’t matte up. Is there an adapter I need for an after market wheel ? No way it will fit over the ring in the picture .
as a refresher. Here’s the link for the 454 build. My wife went back to Mayo Clinic again but makes progress every day…albeit very slowly. Flywheel is a ram billet steel 168tooth neutral balanced wheel. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bbdcb40675.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4c032c3ca.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f8a394bfc.jpeg |
You need a flywheel for a one-piece rear main seal. The one you have is for the older two-piece seal style crankshaft.

I think I figured out my issue. I ordered one with a 0.4 inch larger center bore. Ram-1550X

Pretty sure you need either a Ram 1501 or 1502 depending on if you want 30lb or 40lb. A stock GM flywheel is about 32 lbs. I actually weighed one today for someone. The first two on this list: https://ramclutches.com/ram-true-bal...let-flywheels/ |

The 1550X is an LS flywheel, not for a big block.

It happens. Big projects, you'd be hard pressed not have some mistakes here and there. Limiting it to minor things is the trick.

I hear this.... I bought a Livorsi oil temp gage to match all my Gaffrig gauges. Still haven't got it sent back yet. Thanks. Brad. |

For sure. I took my time. This is the flywheel I need. My motor is internally balanced.
This doesn’t fit either. To small. Been super sick and finally got around to taking it out of the package. Time to buy a bunch and see what fits then send the others back |

That flywheel is not correct. It is for a one pc seal Small Block You need one for a 2 pc seal small block or any big block. If you want a Ram it will be the 1501.
https://ramclutches.com/product/1501/ I updated my post, auto text turned “ bunch” into “gun” for some reason. Whether the flywheel is for a single or two piece seal I don’t think matters much as the balance does. The 1501 is one of the 4 I bought. |

. The only 1 pc seal cranks that are different are small blocks. Believe me the 1501 is correct. If it does not fit then something else is wrong. It might be a little tight, they all are when new. Do you have a good way to measure it and the end of the crank ? I just measured 3 different Big Block cranks. One was a 1 pc seal 454. Another was a 1pc seal 502 and one is a 2 pc seal 396. All three of them measure just about 2.485" I also checked an older 350 2pc seal crank and it is the same. The one in the picture is a 1 pc seal Mercruiser 502 https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...21e6029b31.jpg |
Here is what the inside diameter of the flywheel measures. You can see its only a couple of thousandths difference. This is a used one and has been on and off a few times. Like I said the new ones can be a little snug. See if you can measure the id of the 1501.
I will add one more thing. I have been really disappointed lately in a lot of aftermarket parts so it would not surprise me a single bit if it is made wrong :( :( I seem to remember having a problem with one last year but cant remember if it was a Chevy or a Ford and what brand flywheel it was. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...ba8ff03430.jpg |
I’ll measure when I get off work tomorrow. I’ve got digital one I used to measure pushrods

Bat,
I remembered which customer was having the same problem. I just called him and his was a RAM flywheel also :( He sent his back and got a McLeod one that fit perfectly. I guess you will find out when you measure it. |
