Tartilla,

I’ve usually got water coming from the intercooler overboard within 5-10 secs from startup.

Thanks. Brad.

I was working on the boat today and realized I cannot use the location I thought would fit the strainer. So I HAVE to mount it in front of the engine.

My questions for you are:

1. Do you really need a shut off valve installed with a Bravo 1 water pick up? (It sits higher than the water line)
2. How important is it to keep the water supply hose as short as possible?

The strainer is going to sit at or just below the water line. But the Bravo intake fitting is above it. So do i really need the shut off valve?

If I use the valve, the GIL strainer (1 fitting on each side) will be on the port side of the engine. (for clearance reasons) The intake hose will need to be lengthened about 1', then I'd have to use a 90* fitting to run the hose (about 3' in length) with a big sweep into the factory sea pump.

I can use a Teague strainer (2 fittings on the front) with the shut off valve and no 90* fitting. But i will still have long supply hoses to reach the port side of the engine and back to the sea pump.

OR.... I can just mount the Teague on the starboard side of the engine with no shut off valve or any 90* fitting. The supply hose would just be a little bit longer into the strainer, and the out hose would need to make a big sweep 90 into the factory sea pump. And the hose would be shorter than the alternatives.

Which is a better option?

I have shut off valves on mine, it helps as I can flush the boat even when sitting in salt water. I also run my flush hoses directly into the strainer spare fittings.

On your question about hose length, if you look at my starboard side the hose runs along the outside stringer then into the strainer, just about as long as it could be. Never an issue with water flow or time it takes to fill the motor.

When I take it back to the sea water pump it has a chance to rub on the motor mount so I have cut a piece of hose and slipped it over and held with wire ties so that if it rubs it does on the outside hose.

Having a shut off valve for water umbing is just good practice. Even with the Bravo height, wave action and a rocking hull could load up a hull if a hose happened to came off.

Who hasn't had a clamp fail? I always try to run 2 if I can.

As mentioned...always useful for other tasks lkke flushing and running on the hose at home etc.

The **** off valve can be anywhere efore the strainer, but in visual sight is best...if not accessible by hand...there is simple rigging options to move and lock the 90° valves.

KISS simple is the best COA.

Wildman, that is exactly how mine will be routed with the valve.

Appreciate the help. Thanks guys

That’s gonna be a really clean setup!!

If that was aimed at me, thanks.

If it was meant for Wildman, I agree.

Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully I got the height of the strainer right. The top of the strainer SHOULD be about 3/4" above the water line. Will not know until next year when she gets wet. I do have the Groco SS ball valve to install still.

The hose routing is getting difficult on the starboard side of the engine. There's so much stuff mounted over there. I must have spent over an hour trying to find the best route for the strainer to sea pump hose.

Thanks for the help guys. Got the strainer situated with the shut off valve.

Also opted to replace the fuel fill hose going to the tank since it's nearly 30 yrs old.

Slightly disappointed that the clamps I bought are a bit big. Would have liked to go with the next size smaller.

Also bummed that the Hardin Marine 45* fitting coming off the strainer and the plastic sea pump fittings can only accommodate a single hose clamp. I would have liked double hose clamps on all of the fittings since it's such an important part.

As part of maintenance routine, I always check my clamps. Just grab a 5/16" nut driver and make sure everyone is snug. It's surprising after a fresh install, especially with new hose, how loose they become. I don't think it's the clamp actually loosening, rather the hose shrinking and clamp settling into place on the rubber. It may help with a good piece of mind on your single clamp.
