the drive will move at least 6 inches maybe a little more. Then it will get stiff and stop. How do you get the air out?

Likely need to crack the fittings on the cylinder when it's at either end of max stroke. Full closed...and full extended.

I would turn the drive to a point where when you push it by hand...and lock it against the fluid and now compressed air...the cyl is almost at the end. Crack fitting....fluid and air will bleed out until cyl bottoms out. Tighten connection fitting...move drive back and forth and repeat if required. Do the same for the other end of the cylinder to make sure there's no air there as well. Kind of like bleeding brake calipers.

It's just a simple hydraulic system. This should be done with the engine off.
