Trying to figure out how to run the engine out of the boat, on a stand. Below is the Volvo Penta 8.1 engine wiring diagram.

Im thinking jumping 5 to 6 will activate the ignition system and fuel pumps. Jumping 7 to 6 will activate the starter solenoid. Once the engine starts, remove the 7 to 6 jump. To shut down, remove 5 to 6 jumper.

Thoughts? Could find anything for VP.

I cant read the numbers assigned to your pins BUT yes, sending 12 volts to the purple wire will energize the ignition relay and turn ecm on, temporarily energizing the yellow red wire will crank it over

And she’s running. Ran it at 2000 RPM for 20 minutes then idle to check for leaks. Found one coolant leak as expected. Oil pressure 37PSI at 2K RPM. 20 PSI at idle. Idling at 550-600RPM. Coolant peaked at 170.

To start…. Jump pin 6 to 5….this activates the ECU, IGNITION, Fuel pumps. To activate the starter, jump 6 to 7 momentarily until start.

I activated the fuel pumps about 10 times to prime the fuel system. You can hear when the pumps start pumping the fuel. Tapped into the high pressure side of the fuel pump with a fuel pressure gauge with bleeder. Once 45psi was obtained…Engine started right up on the first tap of pin 7.

Was not expecting how loud it was but it sure does sound nice!

mmm

Next, a few paint touch ups. Reinstall the Fox Marine Gateway onto boat. Paint the helm cubbies. Make an appointment with the marina and have her loaded back in.

Id like to install a fuel pressure sensor compatible with NMEA if anyone has a recommendation.

Well, sort of. But in general speaking, a 8.1/496 is a very different beast than an 8.2/502. I would refer to it as a "thirty over GM 8.1".
If you say 496, it could be a MkIV/Gen5,6 stroker 454 which shares more with the 8.2/502 than the 8.1/496. But if you say GM 8.1, we all know that you are dealing with an 8100 series Gen motor that does not share heads/intakes with any other big block Chevy.

Mcollinstn,

Mathematically, he's correct. Or at least close. I did the bath and came up with 503. But who's counting, right? But you're right. There's damned little in common between the 496 and the 502. Pretty much nothing swaps over.

Thanks. Brad.
