Prep work always seems to be the biggest factor with outdrives. I’ve seen a lot of people have decent results when they completely strip the corrosion, use a good self-etching or zinc chromate primer, and then topcoat with Merc Phantom Black or a quality 2-part marine paint. Once the finish gets chipped, especially in salt water, it feels like it’s a constant maintenance battle. Keeping the anodes in good shape and watching for stray current issues probably matters just as much as the paint itself.

A drive that lives in salt water in a marina with stray power...vs a trailered machine in the salt and washed/run with fresh water after every exposure.

Sand and feather the chipped areas. Reprime with zinc chromate..and proper paint.

YES, put your boat on a lift and keep it OUT of the water. If you plan on keeping a boat for a while it will pay for itself over a short time and keep the overall maintenance to a minimum.
