I don't think that you can cut tempered glass. I believe it will shatter.

You cannot CUT it, but you CAN sand it if you don't have a bunch that needs to come off.

You need to get a power beltsander with 60 grit belts. THEN you gotta run garden hose water on the glass the WHOLE time while you sand away on it.

You can eventually sand it all the way until it is gone, as long as you do not let it heat up.

That, to my knowledge, is the ONLY way to reduce the size of tempered glass.

You WILL know if you let it get too hot.

POW (lots of little square pcs of glass where the windshield used to be)

Oh, I almost didnt see the windshield mention there.

Windshields are not tempered glass. They are 2 pieces of regular high-impact glass with a piece of plastic laminated between them.

Same procedure, though, since you can't cut it, and heat will make the plastic melt and delaminate or become clouded.

actually i do all the big cuts for a local glass shop. the owner is a friend of mine and he has me do all the cuts above 2 or 3 inches. i have done up to about 5 and 6 inches. last one i did was a front glass for a 69 camaro. they broke 5 . . . i did it once . . . my method is with a sandblaster and i have never ruined a piece of glass. give me a call on my cell tomorow if you want a rundown on the process. mcollinstn is right. sanding with lots of water is a good way but best for smaller cuts. kinda tough though with a garden hose an a belt sander. we use a 160 inch belt thats water fed to keep it cool. what aare you working on?

cell# is 419-461-1484

this is my 57 pro street chev that i have been working on. should be done in another year or so. took 3 inches out of the top.
