Default Getting big HP,How??

Wettevette and you other Motorheads with the know-how..

Just a question? Yesterday I was in Michigan and talking to a Known engine builder about maybe turning mine up a tad. I asked him How these guys are getting 1150-1400 hp out of a 540. I told him I had blown, intercooled 540s and one of mine makes 821 and the other 826 hp on 93 gas at 6,000rpms with 5lbs boost, why are mine so low on HP? He told me that He really doubted if mine were really that much and that these guys are in the business to sell engines so they tell people what they want to hear.He Indicated that if I went up to the 580s ci and went with solids and a bigger blower and carbs I might make 900 hp but I would have a lot of torque. Sound right to you??

A turbo engine will make a bit more than a roots. A whipple makes a bit more also.

Why only 5 lbs of boost?

Les, what do you need more than 825hp for?? You'll have to get rid of those Imcos and get a set of #6s or PSI drives.
How ya doing? I haven't talked to you for a while.
Have you talked to the new Iliminator dealer in Valpo yet?

Stay warm

Default big HP

Informaniac

IVe always been running low boost because to tell the truth my boat has always run exceptionally well and I try not to overkill it..
However, there seems to be a lot of new cat owners and they claim to be running in the 130 and 140s and some even more I not opposed to getting beat by cubic money but the amount of people claiming these speeds are getting pretty great and I know that there are only so many lottery winniners, I would like to be ready to move up if I have to and just turning ther boost up I dont think will do it but I dont know..

Payton,
Nice to hear from you, long time!I now have a pair of B-Maxs,That should take care of any drive problems..
I'm leaving this commin week for Miami, If you make the trip look me up I will be staying at Marriott bicayne, over looking the in water show..
Best to you and your Familly!!

eliminator219, go to the thread "going to the dyno tommorrow".
There are a million reasons you may be down on horsepower. We need to know more about your set up. What heads? blower? carburetoin? compression ratio? exhaust? CAMSHAFT?
People on this board can and will gladly help, but we need the info.

Default Pump gas!!

Hey Les,
Using pump gas is going to have limitations and if you want to make 1000 plus HP on pump gas more cubes will be necessary. I don't have very much experience with blower motors, but if you are willing to run 110 octane leaded fuel, like I do, it will make the path much easier. I agree a 572 or 580 cubes like you mentioned will be a good starting point and some fully ported aluminum heads in the 355 or 360 intake will also be necessary. There are a lot of guys on the board who can iron out the details on the heads. I would say use a compression between 8.5 and 9.0 with a carefully designed solid roller. Something with about .714" lift and durations in the high high 260's int. / high 270's exh. on a 114 or 116 cen. Then a 14-71 at 10 to 12 lbs of boost and a couple of 1050 Dominators on top and some full length runner exhaust and you will be good to go. I would guess that combo would idle decent with that many cubes, and be real happy running 6300 to 6500 RPM, which the B-Max can handle. Shaft mounted rockers are a must for solid rollers and this will have to run on good race fuel. We get ours at $2.95 / gallon at Knoll Brothers in City in 300 gallon quantities. If you go with solid rollers let me know and I will gladly run through your lash a couple times a summer and check your spring pressures. I can do an engine in about 10 minutes and the Jesels rarely need adjusting. All I ask is a good deal on one of your 540 short blocks!! Just wait, there will be a ton of good advice on this topic from guys on the board that know a lot more than me. Talk to ya later!!

If you have not seen this check it out. It can be done my question is how long do they live and what do you have to do to maintain them.

Getting 1,000hp from a 565 is not too difficult. It will run on 93 octane, and it can be made to last. WETTE VETTE, your blower cam specs are off. You don't need that much intake, you need more exhaust. It will idle. You also don't need as much head as you think. I did a 565 with Dart Pro 1 345 heads, 10-71 Littlefield, 2 950 Holley blower carbs, 8.75 cr, Whipple intercoolers. Made over 1,000. Very reliable.
If you use the same engine with the Quad Rotor, add about 100-150hp. If you use a proper size centrifugal, add a few more.
Check the thread "Going to the Dyno Tommorrow- 509 inches, 930hp. I think a bigger Procharger or a Vortech and a Tomcat intercooler would easily make over the 1,000 mark and be quite reliable. I am working on that now and will post as soon as I get the dyno figures.

Default How much power do you want??

That is the question that needs to be answered before to much research is done. 1000 HP on pump gas or ????? HP on 110 octane. How fast do you want to go? It can be done!!
