Default smell of synthetic oil

I just bought a used 502 magnum with supposedly synthetic oil in it. I smells almost like gas?Does synthetic oil smell different than petroleumbased oil?

Is it possible for the oil to get contaminated with gas? It is a 1999 502 MPI, all stock, with 50 hours on it.
