You can use the thick grey stuff all over the lifter and it will be no problem. The red stuff is newer technology and I like it better. Oil is sufficient on roller lifters, but NOT on flat tappets. The best insurance for cam breakin I know of is to use GM Engine Oil Additive, no matter what you use for oil or cam lube. It can be had from any GM dealer. Also, don't let it get below 2,000rpm for at least 15 minuites. Good luck, post or pm for more!!
