$1500 wont go far, all the small things you don't think of now add up real quick. Like a good gasket set, belts, hoses, general tune-up parts ect. ect. ect.
You want to keep it reliable. If you starter, alternator and ignition are in question, you've almost spent $1000 with what's listed here.

Do a compression test if the motor is ok buy a used procharger i think there is one in the classifieds on this site for carb motor for around 2K biggest bang for the buck.

MadBouyz, you bet - a Volvo 275T. We'll see what happens. The guys on the Donzi.net say they're tough, just slow.

I saw a used set of KE's for $1,500 and I forgot about gaskets, hoses and belts.

How about this:
750cfm Holley carb and electric fuel pump (Qjet needs a rebuild anyway)
Good gaskets, hoses and belts
1 quart Merc racing blue paint
New starter, alternator and ignition if mine won't work
Used headers - if I can find the right deal

The paint alone should be worth 30hp!

We'll see how this does and keep an eye out for a BIG long block.

The reason I ask is that I can recount for you what happened to the original owner of our boat 30 years ago.This is rare position to be in on this board but with only 35 of these critters made and knowing the original owner in our case I can give you some live history.....

Ours originally had a 350/300 CSHP Chris Craft engine with a 270 drive (no trim yet avbl).No doubt the owner was told at the time "Ya don't have to slow down for waves with this boat !"
Although not substantially powered by todays standards,the boat did occasionally give a little jump and if the prop saw the tiniest bit of air the engine would build a few extra revs (remember I can't see this behemoth getting too flighty with this little motor).Upon full imersion back in the water the prop would bite and the upper gearcase would explode !
This happened many times before the mechanics figured out what was going on.The owner eventually got used to slowing down for waves (definitely no more fun) and easing the boat on a plane very carefully.
I know that the guys on the Donzi board run quite a bit of power through their Volvos,I don't know though if putting that power through the unit on a smaller boat helps keep them together...the prop is the equalizer so it should'nt make any difference,but I think their faith in those old 270-280 units is a bit over-rated.
For the record I tried for 14 years to destroy a pair of the same units in one of pop's old boats and failed,but they were hooked up to the in line 6's that Volvo made then. I'm SURE i remember hearing way back then that the 270 unit had a safety rating of 190-200 hp. Maybe too conservative ? ?

I've rattled on enough... keep us uptodate with photos too .
